New York Knicks Defeat the Spurs While They “Dunk the Halls”
Christmas Day was sports heaven for everyone across the country. One early matchup that was an automatic thriller was Knicks versus Spurs. This showdown was everything a basketball enthusiast could want. It came down to the final few seconds, yet in the end the New York Knicks would defeat the Spurs while they “Dunk the Halls.”
San Antonio against New York was one of the highly anticipated games of the week. Fans wanted to see Wemby face off with Bridges and these stars did not disappoint. With both athletes having a 40+ point game.
This game also had a fun, festive element to it for younger viewers. All thanks to Disney magic. Disney, ESPN and the NBA all teamed up to deliver the gift of “Dunk the Halls” — the first real-time animated NBA game. And it was beyond entertaining (watching Pluto and Daisy dunk was hilarious) with various Disney characters hooping representing the team’s stars. For those wanting to view this version of the NBA matchup they could catch it on ESPN2, or also stream on Disney+ and ESPN+.
Nevertheless, regardless of which broadcast was more your flavor, you were treated to a BATTLE. The Knicks and Spurs exchanged blows and kept the score TIGHT throughout. Even in the 4th quarter with 5 minutes to go the scoreboard read 102-100; with San Antonio on top. Then moments later the Knicks went up one point, and then the Spurs took the lead right back!
How the Spurs Vs Knicks Christmas Thriller Ends
That was literally the vibe of the whole game. However, towards the end of regulation the Knicks slightly pull away with a 6 point lead, but the Spurs’ Chris Paul knocks down a huge 3. There’s 38 seconds left on the clock and the Knicks are up 114-117. Who would walk away as the victors?
Let us tell you… the ending was wild. New York drains the clock not giving the Spurs an opportunity to do damage. The Knicks inbounded on their end with 38.6 left and managed to melt the full clock while missing two shots and getting rebounds to end the game. Like bodies were flying and sliding everywhere trying to make a play, but the Knicks hold on.
San Antonio’s Wembanyama scored 42 points to come close to breaking the Christmas Day debut scoring record of 45. A record set by a rookie Wilt Chamberlain in 1959. But despite Wemby’s impressive performance the Knicks persevered down the stretch to win 117-114 on Wednesday.

Mikal Bridges definitely was one of the keys to New York’s win. Bridges put up a whopping 41 points with 4 assists. Mikal had his best game of the season, scoring 41 on 17-of-25 shooting with six 3s, while Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns combined for 41 points. But also the Knicks defense got some big plays in that helped them to finish putting the game away.
However, getting back to Mikal, he made a little December 25th history. According to the New York Knicks’ Public Relations, “Mikal Bridges scored 41 points today against the Spurs. He joins Bernard King (60) and Richie Guerin (40) as the only Knicks to score 40+ points on Christmas.” Nicely done Bridges and welcome to the club.
