New York Jets Will Move On From Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets Will Most Likely Move On From Aaron Rodgers

While most are busy trying to discern or predict whether today’s victor will be the Kansas City Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles. Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts? Football focus is momentarily shifting towards a veteran quarterback. On Sunday, sources confirm that the New York Jets will most likely move on from Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers has been a part of the Jets organization for a few seasons. But his tenure will be remembered as a tumultuous one. From dealing with an Achilles injury to serious losing streaks. A situation that unfortunately for both parties did not result in moving the franchise towards a path of success.

This decision to fire Rodgers is the latest resolution and development by the Jets to get a fresh start. Not too long ago, New York hired former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their head coach; after firing Robert Saleh during the season, have a new OC in Tanner Engstrand and have also hired Darren Mougey as their new general manager. Whew.

Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports mentions that,

The Jets moving on from Aaron Rodgers wasn’t necessarily about his play — it was more so about his contract and the significant dead money that would remain whenever they eventually parted ways. New GM Darren Mougey and HC Aaron Glenn want to take the hit now and start fresh.

While further discussions are expected, the overwhelming belief is that the Jets are unlikely to move forward with Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback in 2025, sources tell NFL at FOX. With a new regime in place, many anticipate a fresh start, and a resolution is expected sooner rather than later.

New York Jets Will Most Likely Move On From Aaron Rodgers

Since money is an important component and issue, obviously New York is weighing possible financial implications and consequences. With Rodgers most likely on his way out in New York, the former first-round pick could decide to retire or begin his search for his next home or squad. The Jets would take a $14 million cap hit in 2025, with $35 million deferred to 2026 if they release him on the first day of the new league year.

But it seems Rodgers has been doing his best to work things out with the Jets. Aaron Rodgers was open to reworking his contract to help the Jets financially. He talked about this on the record. So then, once more in this case money is not a factor in the Jets parting ways.

Additionally, Rodgers reworked his contract in 2023 and it’s still a bit complicated in its structure. They have $49 million in dead cap they’ll have to manage—but new GM Darren Mougey just helped manage a similar situation in Denver. So the Jets have someone skilled to navigate this storm.

The Jets can take the full hit this year or designate him a 6/1 cut. If Rodgers were to play this year under his existing contract, there would be a $63M dead charge when the contract voids in 2026. In essence, you’d be dedicating $86.5M in cap space (present and future) for one season of play.

Also sports reporter Jay Glazer adds,

“Big scoopage: Aaron Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team, only to be told that the team was moving on from him. If that means that he will be a June 1 designation that allows him to sign with any team in the league on March 12 if he decides to continue to play. Given that Aaron made the effort to fly back to discuss his future, all signs point to him continuing to play. It just won’t be for the Jets.”

New York will have an opportunity to get a new, exciting QB soon. The Jets have the No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and could look for another QB in free agency.
