New York Jets Unveiled New Legacy Collection Uniforms

Chairman Woody Johnson had said that there would be changes coming for their uniforms. And yesterday, the New York Jets unveiled their new legacy collection uniforms. So what makes it a legacy collection? Well, there will be three uniforms in legacy green, legacy white, and legacy black which will honor the New York Sack Exchange era from 1979 – 1989.  Legacy jerseys will have double-stripe shoulders and single-stripe pants just like the uniforms had between 1979 and 1989.

Jets president Hymie Elhai said, “Recreating our uniforms, as well as developing a modernized look for the organization signifies our commitment to progress, remaining innovative, and delivering excellence to our players and fans. Elevating the New York Jets identity with a refreshed uniform embodies the unity, and a timeless sense of the Sack Exchange era, while empowering every player and generations of fans to stand out and stay true to our team’s heritage.”

Jim Pons, Video Director and self-taught man of the New York Jets, designed the Legacy logo. It consists of the word Jets with a jet taking off from the letter J. It was a simplified, classy, and smoother design from the previous logo.

In case you don’t know what the New York Sack Exchange Era was about here’s some info for you. The Sack Exchange was comprised of Joe Klecko, Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam. Lyons and Salaam were defensive tackles while Klecko and Gastineau were defensive ends. All four of them were drafted by the Jets during the 1970’s. Quarterback sacks officially began to be tracked in 1982 and Klecko and Gastineau used to compete in getting the most sacks. In 1981 the Jets led the league with 66 sacks.

Clearly those guys were a quarterback’s worst nightmare. So it makes sense that the Jets want to return to the glory days. This legacy collection may be the spark the Jets need to have a good season in the fall. But if not, at least they will look cool in the new unis.
