New York Jets Trade Justin Fields to Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City had to make a move. Their star quarterback suffered a major injury last season, leading to the team missing the playoffs for the first time in years. Chiefs were officially eliminated from playoff contention in
December 2025, marking their first time missing the postseason since 2014, ending a 10-year run. So then, in hopes to slow the skid and slide; a trade has come to fruition. This week, the New York Jets have traded Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is currently focused on his recovery after suffering the most significant injury of his career late in the 2025 NFL season. The three-time Super Bowl champion tore both the ACL and LCL in his left knee during a Dec. 14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. While he works towards his return to the field, the Chiefs front office worked on securing another QB option.

Nevertheless, Mahomes is working hard to be season ready. The quarterback underwent surgery for the injury on Dec. 15, with the expectation that he would be sidelined for 9-12 months. That puts Mahomes’ timeline at about September, at the earliest. Andy Reid recently commented on Patrick’s progress thus far and his efforts to rehab swiftly. Reid says,

“He’s around here all the time,” Reid said, via ESPN. “He spends a ton of time here, seven hours a day. He’s in there cranking away and making progress every day. It’s great to see. [Athletic trainer Julie Frymyer] grinds on him and makes sure he stays on task and challenges him. He keeps showing up. That’s about half the battle on these things when you have these injuries.

It’s not going to be a pleasant thing. Every day, you’ve got to fight through it and you’ve got to attack the challenge of the workout and rehab. He’s doing a great job with that.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the news regarding the Jets trade on Monday. He revealed,

“Trade: the New York Jets are finalizing a deal that will send QB Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, pending a physical, per ESPN sources. Other teams were interested, but Fields’ preference was to go to Kansas City.

Patrick Mahomes suffered his season-ending knee injury on December 14. At a minimum, adding Justin Fields allows him to take the bulk of the reps during offseason workouts and potentially into training camp as Mahomes continues to recover in hopes of being ready for the regular season.”

As part of the trade, the Jets are giving Justin Fields an $8M signing bonus, plus he will earn $3M fully guaranteed salary from the Chiefs for a total of $11M. Fields previously had $10M fully guaranteed. Chiefs are expected to send a 2027 6th-round pick to the Jets in exchange for Justin Fields.

Furthermore, the Chiefs will take on $3 million of the $10 million Justin Fields was guaranteed in 2026, per source. So, the Jets effectively offset both the cash and pick they gave up to get new starter Geno Smith by moving last year’s starter.
