New York Jets Interim Head Coach Made A Significant Change
After the Jets fired Robert Saleh mid-season, Jeff Ulbrich was tapped to step into the role temporarily. As the New York Jets interim head coach he has made a significant change by choosing Todd Downing to take over play-calling duties for the Jets offense. However, Nathaniel Hackett will remain as the offensive coordinator. Yesterday Ulbrich explained his reasoning to reporters:
“This is more a byproduct of [seeking] a different take on things,” Ulbrich explained Thursday. “I’m not saying it’s a better or worse take on things by any means, but just a different take on things, a fresh approach. So ultimately, Todd will have the full say on the game plan and ultimately the plays that are called within the game.”
What’s really interesting about this change is that Robert Saleh had considered firing Nathaniel Hackett just prior to his own termination. But before that could happen Jets owner Woody Johnson fired Saleh on Tuesday morning. Sources say Saleh could have made the move to fire Hackett as early as Tuesday. Which is when Johnson ultimately made the decision on Saleh himself. Sources say if Saleh had moved forward with firing Hackett, he would have likely installed Todd Downing as the offensive coordinator.
An offensive change was needed because the Jets offense has been in the basement this season. They rank 23rd in first downs per game (18), 23rd in offensive points per game (18.6), 27th in net passing yards per attempt (5.4) and 27th in total yards (286.6.). And apparently the players are good with the change. Aaron Rodgers did note on Wednesday that he would not be opposed to the Jets shaking up play-calling duties.

Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor regarding Downing commented:
“I just met him when I signed this past spring, but we have already connected,” Taylor said. “I have nothing but respect for him. I think he has a great feel for what the room likes and has a good pulse on the offense obviously being in his second year with it. We are very comfortable with him.”
We’ll see how the change works out when the Jets face the Buffalo Bills this coming Monday night.
In other Jets news, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport posted the following:
Sources: CAA is parting ways with #Jets passer rusher Haason Reddick, who is the NFL’s last holdout. Reddick has not shown up at the facility, has collected millions in fines and his situation currently has no end in sight.
Losing his agent representation will definitely not help Reddick’s situation. At this point he should just go back to work.
