New York Jets Fired General Manager Joe Douglas
After losing to the Indianapolis Colts this past Sunday a major change has been made. The New York Jets have fired their General Manager Joe Douglas. It was just last month that they fired their head coach Robert Saleh. Douglas joined the organization on June 7, 2019 signing a six-year contract to become the general manager. Apparently, the Jets decided not to wait for the last year of his contract to end. It’s rare for a GM not to sign an extension prior to his deal expiring.
Owner Woody Johnson released a statement this morning regarding the termination:
“Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the general manager of the New York Jets,” Johnson said in a statement. “I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward. Phil Savage will be the interim general manager for the remainder of the season. We will begin the process to identify a new General Manager immediately.”
The Jets have plenty of talent on their team. Douglas is credited with helping to build a once-dominant defense, including drafting Quinnen Williams with his first selection in New York. His famed 2022 class included defense and offense Rookies of the Year in 2022 in cornerback Sauce Gardner and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Along with Breece Hall and Jermaine Johnson. However, all that talent is not producing on the field. Jets beat reporter Rich Cimini posted on social media:
“Six weeks ago, Woody Johnson said this was the probably the best roster he’s had in 25 years of ownership. Today, he fired the architect of the roster. Things change fast in JetLand.”
That’s a pretty good summary of where things stand with the Jets.
New York Jets Fired General Manager Joe Douglas
Douglas traded for Aaron Rodgers gambling that the four-time MVP could lead the franchise to glory. However, he suffered an Achilles injury and missed last season. He has remained healthy this season but hasn’t performed up to expectations. Now that his head coach and General Manager have been let go what’s in store for the soon to be 41-year old quarterback? History shows that incoming head coaches and general managers tend to bring in their own quarterback.
Interim GM Phil Savage has more than 25 years of NFL front office experience. He was in his sixth season with the Jets as the team’s senior football advisor. So where the Jets go from here remains to be seen but they appear to be in rebuilding mode.
