New York Jets Benched Quarterback Justin Fields Halfway Through Game With Panthers
Hopes were high when he left the Pittsburgh Steelers to join gang green. And they had a new head coach to boot. So it looked like things might be changing for the better. But that has not been the case so far and things came to a head yesterday. The New York Jets benched their quarterback Justin Fields halfway through their game with the Carolina Panthers. Backup quarterback and 15-year veteran Tyrod Taylor stepped in for the second half of the game but the Jets still lost 13-6 to the Panthers.
As indicated by the score the Jets struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball. Prior to being benched at halftime, Fields had completed 6 of 12 passing attempts for 46 yards and tacked on 22 rushing yards on four carries. The offense failed to pick up first downs and totaled 97 yards and one field goal in the first half. So head coach Aaron Glenn made the decision to bench Fields after the first half. Glenn spoke about his decision following the game stating:
“It’s always a tough decision,” Glenn said of changing quarterbacks in the middle the stream. “As the head coach, you have to take a look at the team, see what’s best for you to put yourself in position to win the game. That’s the only thing gong through my mind. I told the offensive staff, I told Justin and Tyrod what I was going to do, and I made the decision.”
At this point we don’t know if Fields will get his job back or who is going to be the starter against Cincinnati next week. Especially since, Taylor didn’t have any more success than Fields while he was in the game. He completed 10 of 22 for 126 yards, and like Fields was also sacked 3 times. Taylor also threw two interceptions, after which his rating was 25.9, and ran three times for 11 yards.

With both quarterbacks being sacked multiple times we have to look at the offensive line, right? For starters they have already lost guard Alijah Vera-Tucker for the season due to a torn triceps. And Steve Heiden is in his first season as the offensive line coach, so there may be some growing pains involved. And it didn’t help that WR Garrett Wilson was inactive for the first time in his NFL career. Glenn was looking for a spark on the offense and was hoping Taylor could provide it. But that didn’t come to fruition.
The loss yesterday now leaves the Jets winless this season with a record of 0-7, the last team still looking for a win this season. The situation is familiar for the Jets so some sort of change is needed to get things turned around. But is benching Fields the answer? You kind of get the feeling that more than a benching will be needed to get the Jets on a winning trajectory.
