New York Jets And Haason Reddick In Contract Standoff
Earlier this year Reddick was traded to the New York Jets from the Philadelphia Eagles. Reddick had been seeking a new contract when he was with the Eagles. Since the Eagles allowed him to be traded they weren’t willing to give him the contract he wanted. Now it looks like he’s back in the same boat again as the New York Jets and Haason Reddick are in a contract standoff at this point. Reddick is still in search of a contract that is satisfactory to him.
The expectation of the Jets was that Reddick would report to the team and that they would work through any contractual issues. However, Reddick didn’t do either of those things. He wasn’t there for any of the offseason programs and he hasn’t reported to training camp. And as of yesterday he requested to be traded. There must have been a misunderstanding between the two parties from the very beginning. How else could they be so far apart in their expectations?
At any rate, the Jets were quick to respond to Reddick’s trade request. Below is the statement from Jets General Manager Joe Douglas:
“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report, “Douglas said in a statement. “Since the trade discussions back in March, we have been clear, direct and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”

The Jets were expecting Reddick to be an elite pass rusher for the team. Now without him on board it could prevent the defense from operating as head coach Robert Saleh would like. As Dan Orlovsky pointed out, Saleh wants to rush four guys to get to the quarterback specifically from the edge. Reddick was also going to be paired with star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. If Reddick doesn’t play the Jets will have to rely on their two young edge rushers.
As for Reddick, he has missed 21 days of training camp incurring a $50,000 fine for every day missed. And with missing out on an offseason bonus, his holdout has cost him $1.7 million. It would seem that at this point Reddick would be better off financially by reporting to the team. Stop the bleeding (of money) and try to work out a deal of some sort. Otherwise, a new contract may not even be worth the hassle.
