New Stadium Deal Gets Done In Jacksonville

New Stadium Deal Gets Done In Jacksonville

Within 24 hours of the Carolina Panthers stadium deal getting inked, another one is announced. A new stadium deal gets done in Jacksonville for the other big cats, the Jaguars. As announced on the team website, Jacksonville City Council early Tuesday evening voted to approve the Stadium of the Future deal between the City of Jacksonville and the Jaguars. The 19-member council approved the projected $1.4 billion renovation by a 14-1-2 margin.

Over 30 years ago it was a long shot for Jacksonville to land an NFL franchise. But former owners, Delores and Wayne Weaver, made it a reality. Now it appears that getting this new stadium deal done was just as much of a reach. One council member said, “Tonight let’s celebrate like it’s 1993, we did it again!”

The council agreed to invest a little more than $775 million toward the $1.4 billion ticket price for the renovations.  Jacksonville mayor, Donna Deegan, was thrilled about the deal. She said, “This is a historic day for our city. Together this is what we can accomplish.”

In the meantime, EverBank Stadium is intended to become a modern, state-of-the-art facility. They’re even calling it the “stadium of the future.” Heck even the graphic of the stadium looks futuristic. However, the more important point is that the deal will keep the Jaguars in the city for many years to come.

Other smaller market cities have lost their franchises in the past, something Jacksonville absolutely wanted to avoid. “We studied those cities that had problems with their teams,” Jaguars President Mark Lamping said. Shad’s (owner Shad Khan) commitment from the very beginning was to do everything to ensure that doesn’t happen to Jacksonville.” Mission accomplished.

A joint statement from the city council and Jaguars was released:

“We’re excited that the City Council has approved this historic agreement that will keep the Jaguars in Jacksonville for decades to come, enhance the fan experience for NFL and non-NFL events, and provide a springboard for downtown growth starting with the completion of world-class riverfront parks.”

Some of the renovations for the stadium will include:

  • A protective canopy
  • Wider concourses
  • New communal spaces
  • Scenic lookout decks
  • Increased seating options
  • Nature park

So it looks like this deal has big plans not just for the stadium but for the whole city.

But not so fast. The NFL still has to approve the deal which will go before them in October. However, it doesn’t seem likely that it won’t be approved. Especially since all parties involved are so happy about it, why rain on their parade?
