New Orleans Pelicans Parted Ways With Executive David Griffin

New Orleans Pelicans Parted Ways With Executive David Griffin

Yesterday we learned that the Phoenix Suns fired their head coach Mike Budenholzer right after the end of the regular NBA season. But then more news came from another NBA team. ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania reported on the termination of a Pelicans executive. Apparently the New Orleans Pelicans parted ways with executive David Griffin. Charania posted the following on his x.com account:

“The New Orleans Pelicans have fired executive vice president David Griffin, sources tell ESPN. After six seasons, the franchise will have a new head of basketball operations.”

“New Orleans went 209-263 under Griffin’s leadership, building a strong roster this season but suffering significant injuries. Pelicans coach Willie Green remains in place as the franchise holds a full search for the next lead basketball operations executive.”

However, before the day was over even more news was coming from the Pelicans organization. Charania went on to report:

“Hall of Famer Joe Dumars is a serious frontrunner to become the lead basketball executive with the New Orleans Pelicans, sources tell ESPN. The 2003 exec of the year and 2004 championship exec with the Pistons is a Louisiana native. Dumars is currently heading NBA basketball ops.”
“The Pelicans and Dumars are expected to engage in conversations to finalize a deal by the end of the week, sources tell ESPN.”

But hold the phone because this morning, even more news came out regarding the new basketball executive. Apparently those conversations went so well that Charania updated his last report with the following:

“Hall of Famer Joe Dumars is finalizing a deal to become the new president of basketball operations of the New Orleans Pelicans, sources tell ESPN. Dumars was president of the Pistons from 2000-14, building the 2004 Detroit championship team. Now returns home to Louisiana.”

So in less than 24 hours it appears the search is over and David Griffin has already been replaced.

However, despite the whirlwind search for his replacement, the Pelicans Governor Gayle Benson did put out a statement regarding Griffin:

“After considerable thought and evaluation, I have decided to relieve David Griffin of his duties as executive vice president of basketball operations,” Benson said. “This was a difficult decision, but one that I feel is necessary at this time to bring a fresh approach to our front office and build a culture that will deliver sustainable success, on and off the court. I am committed to hiring the right person to lead our basketball operations department and deliver an NBA Championship to our city. That is what our fans deserve. I am truly appreciative of David for his leadership and many contributions to the Pelicans organization and the New Orleans community over the last six years. We wish David and his wife, Meredith, and their family all the best moving forward.”

It looks like the Pelicans have wrapped it all up quickly and cleanly. So now we wait to see what team makes the next move.
