New England Patriots Locked Down CB/PR Marcus Jones With Three-Year Extension
The departure of Tom Brady after the 2019 season left the team in disarray. And the winning ways of the organization disappeared. But it seems they have found their new franchise quarterback in Drake Maye. But he’s not the only one restoring some luster to the glory they once had. The New England Patriots locked down CB/PR Marcus Jones with a three-year extension. Like Maye, Jones has proven himself to be a play-maker.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on the transaction:
“The #Patriots have agreed to terms with standout CB and All-Pro punt returner Marcus Jones, per me and @TomPelissero, with Jones getting three new years. A big-time reward for the homegrown star.”
Jones was a 2022 third-round draft choice and was set to hit free agency in 2026. But the Patriots pre-empted that by coming to terms with Jones. The move proves the Patriots’ strategy to retain homegrown talent amid their resurgence. Besides Jones is not only a team captain but also one of their top defenders. Plus he is an All-Pro punt returner. Thus far he has recorded 27 solo tackles, two interceptions, and a sack in the team’s 6-2 start to the 2025 season. Generally he plays inside at slot corner, but can also handle zone coverage. His versatility is a big plus for the defense.
As Patriots staff writer Evan Lazar pointed out, Jones ranks fifth among slot corners in success rate in man coverage (42.9%), with four passes defensed in man-to-man. Jones has also forced quarterbacks to throw into a tight window on 30.8% of his man coverage snaps, ranking seventh among slot cornerbacks.
In addition to his defensive prowess, Jones is one of the NFL’s best punt returners.

In the Week 3 win over the Carolina Panthers, Jones was named the AFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week with an 87-yard punt return touchdown and a 61-yard return that set up another Patriots touchdown. Jones is a top-notch cornerback, excellent punt returner, hard-worker and team leader. He will be with the team at least through the 2028 season. And he’ll be working alongside their other highly effective corners Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis III.
With Jones under contract the Patriots have a key piece of the defense as well as a top punt returner secured. The future is looking bright for the Patriots on both sides of the ball. Congratulations to Marcus Jones on getting his three-year extension!
