New England Patriots Inducting Julian Edelman And Bill Parcells To Their Hall Of Fame

Every year the team inducts new members into their Hall of Fame. The inductees can be former players or coaches or someone who made major contributions to the organization. This year the New England Patriots are inducting Julian Edelman and Bill Parcells to their Hall of Fame. Edelman a former wide receiver has always been a fan favorite. And legendary former head coach Bill Parcells brought credibility to the franchise when it was struggling.

Edelman played quarterback at Kent State but that’s not the position he was used for when he was selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft. In an effort to just make the roster he became a return specialist and a wide receiver. He followed the path of earlier players such as Troy Brown and Kevin Faulk. Those guys transformed into dependable wide receivers and special teamers as did Edelman. After former wide receiver Wes Welker moved on, Edelman slipped into the spot vacated by Welker. He soon became a favorite target for quarterback Tom Brady.

While still playing the game, Edelman became the author of a children’s book called Flying High. It’s about a squirrel named Jules who learns to overcome his physical limitations through hard work and the assistance of a goat named Tom. He even hosted a talk show on YouTube called Burger Tyme in which he would interview his fellow teammates and celebrities while eating burgers. So it’s not surprising that these days he’s doing a podcast with former tight end Rob Gronkowski called Dudes on Dudes. They talk about their favorite dudes, memories and unknown locker room stories.

Edelman spent his entire 12-year NFL career with the Patriots. He ranks second in team history with 620 receptions, fourth with 6,822 receiving yards, and ninth with 36 receiving touchdowns. But his durability and clutch catches are what endeared him to the fans.

Former head coach Bill Parcels was with the Patriots from 1993 to 1996, providing a much needed spark to the team. He guided the Patriots to their first division title in 11 years. Although he made the team better it wasn’t all roses. He once famously said, “If they want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries.” He was referring to being frustrated over player personnel decisions. Which is likely why his former protegee Bill Belichick insisted on being the head coach and general manager when he was hired.

Nevertheless Parcells is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants. He also coached for the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys and was executive vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins. He also held an advisory role for the Cleveland Browns. Parcells coached some of the greatest defensive players such as Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson and DeMarcus Ware. Plus he’s already a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The ceremonies will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. ET on the Patriot Place Plaza. The event is free and open to the public.
