New England Patriots Have Tapped Jerod Mayo As New Head Coach
Well we didn’t have to wait long to see what the Patriots would do. Today the New England Patriots have tapped Jerod Mayo as their new head coach. It is a new day for the organization and things will obviously be different in New England.
Next week on January 17 at noon, he will be officially introduced at a press conference. Mayo will become the 15th head coach of the franchise’s history. He will also be the first minority as well as the first former player to be the head coach.
According to Patriots.com, last offseason the Patriots put in a succession plan for the position to pass from Belichick to Mayo. Especially since he was highly sought after by other teams. In addition, Mayo is also well-liked and respected by the players.
Veteran player Davon Godchaux said, “He deserves to be a head coach. He’s a leader. You have to have your guys want to get up and play for you. It’s not easy to do in the NFL when you have other grown men. It’s not easy to get up to play for coaches, especially coaches you don’t respect. I think I’m speaking for everybody when I say everybody respects Coach Mayo. Mayo is like that alpha male. You have that one alpha male who sticks out in the group, and he’s fun to be around. We all joke, we laugh, but when it’s serious, we go out there and play.”
Mayo has been working as the linebackers coach for the past five seasons. He has also been worked on football operations such as being involved in the search for an offensive coordinator. And working out first rounder Christian Gonzalez privately prior to the 2023 NFL draft.

The Patriots will likely continue to have defensive success under Mayo. However, it remains to be seen how he will shore up the offensive side of the ball.
However, it appears that his hiring is a good fit for the organization. As a former player, Super Bowl champion, and Pro Bowler he has the football pedigree. The devoted husband and father has also been an active member of the New England community. All the pieces are in place for Mayo to continue a successful career with the Patriots. I’m definitely rooting for the best for him and his family.
