New England Patriots Announced Their New Coordinators

It’s that time of year when teams are making staff changes and there has been quite a lot of activity. With a new head coach in place it stands to reason that new offensive and defensive coordinators would be required. Therefore, the New England Patriots announced who will be their new coordinators. Josh McDaniels will return to the Patriots for the third time as their offensive coordinator. Former defensive line coach Terrell Williams of the Detroit Lions will be the defensive coordinator. And Jeremy Springer who joined the New England Patriots last season will return as the special teams coordinator.

Josh McDaniels has had great success as an offensive coordinator but not so much as a head coach. His last head coaching job was with the Las Vegas Raiders who terminated him during the 2023 season. However, in his 13 seasons as offensive coordinator with New England, his offenses have finished in the Top-10 rankings eight times, including the NFL’s No. 1 ranked offense in 2007, 2012 and 2017. He started his NFL career in the personnel department of New England.

McDaniels was named New England’s quarterbacks coach in 2004. In 2006, he was promoted to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. In 2007, McDaniels coordinated an offense that set all-time NFL records for points scored (589) and touchdowns (75) en route to an undefeated regular season. No doubt the Patriots are hoping that he will continue to build on his excellent track record as an offensive coordinator.

Jeremy Springer spent two seasons (2022-23) as a special teams assistant with the Los Angeles Rams. In 2024, Springer coached players such as Brenden Schooler and Marcus Jones. Schooler earned first team All-Pro honors and his first invitation to the Pro Bowl. Whereas Jones finished second in the NFL with a 14.8-yard average on 26 punt returns.

The Detroit Lions are hemorrhaging coaches like a leaky boat. Everyone wants a piece of their success so their coaching staff is being snapped up quickly. One such coach is Terrell Williams who was the defensive line coach. He has been tapped as the defensive coordinator for the Patriots by head coach Mike Vrabel. According to Adam Schefter and Mike Reiss,

“Terrell Williams worked with Mike Vrabel in Tennessee from 2018-2023… Vrabel thought so highly of Williams that he had him serve as head coach of the Titans’ 2023 preseason opener.”

Williams NFL career started in 2012 with the Oakland Raiders (2012-14) as the defensive line coach. He held the same position with the Miami Dolphins (2015-17) before Vrabel brought him to Tennessee. During his tenure with the Titans Williams contributed to defensive units that ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing yards allowed during that span.

Vrabel is a coach that knows exactly who he wants as part of his staff.
