New England Patriots Acquired Top Free Agents Released Veterans
They had the most cap money to spend this year and they have been busy using it. They had a need to retool their defense while also trying to get some weapons for their quarterback. And so far they have leaned heavily on shoring up the defensive side of the ball. In the process, the New England Patriots have acquired some of the top free agents and have released some of their top veterans.
They made lots of big moves including acquiring defensive tackle Milton Williams. Not only will Milton be paid over $100 million over four years. But his signing also shows that the Patriots can attract high-end talent in free agency. Williams was part of a dominant rotation of defensive linemen in Philadelphia. And he’ll be able to help the team if Christian Barmore isn’t able to play. Barmore has suffered with blood clot issues twice in 2024 and his future availability is in question.
After trading DT Davon Godchaux to the New Orleans Saints, the Patriots picked up Khyiris Tonga from the Arizona Cardinals. The 338 pound defensive tackle can fill the void left by Godchaux and nicely compliments Milton Williams and Christian Barmore, if he returns. Another big acquisition for them was cornerback Carlton Davis formerly of the Detroit Lions. They already have elite cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Pairing Gonzalez and Davis could make them one of the top cornerback duos in the league.
Other players they acquired include OLB Robert Spillane from the Las Vegas Raiders and edge rusher Harold Landry from the Tennessee Titans. Landry was drafted by Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel when he was the head coach of the Titans. On the offensive side of the ball they brought in tackle Morgan Moses, quarterback Josh Dobbs and wide receiver Mack Hollins.

They haven’t done a lot on the offensive side especially when it comes to helping out their quarterback Drake Maye. But the offseason is still young and there’s time to add to their roster. However, they did let go of some of their veteran star players. They let Jacoby Brissett, cornerback Jonathan Jones and Deatrich Wise all sign with other teams. Jones and Wise had been defensive pillars on the team and their leadership will be missed in the locker room.
Today we learned that they didn’t re-sign longtime center captain David Andrews. He started 121 of 124 regular-season games played since joining the Pats as an undrafted free agent in 2015. But is currently recovering from shoulder surgery. So with all the changes happening in New England it looks like a new era is beginning.
