Netflix Officially Announces They Will Broadcast Two Christmas NFL Games in 3 Season Deal
Football and chill? Apparently, yes. There had been rumors and speculation galore. However, the most popular streaming service decided to go ahead and put all the talking to rest. Netflix officially announces they will broadcast two Christmas Day games in a deal with the National Football League that will last for three seasons.
Netflix is joining other “non-cable” entities in getting the opportunity to get in on the sports market. More specifically, the NFL viewership. Additionally, this seems like this is the direction in which the league actually wishes to go.
The NFL had piece-milled out games to Amazon Prime. Making Thursday Night Football available through the scope of Amazon only. Nevertheless, the NFL didn’t just test out to see if fans would be willing to pay up to watch football during the regular season. Last season, during the postseason, a playoff game featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins was streamed via the Peacock; an entity of NBC. The broadcast broke streaming records; therefore, encouraging the National Football League to consider more viewing options.
Moreover, an official posting by Netflix revealed details on what football fans can expect from this broadcasting partnership. The posting states,
“On Dec. 25, 2024, we’ll be the global home of the NFL’s two Christmas Day marquee games: the Super Bowl LVII-winning Chiefs vs Steelers and Ravens vs. Texans. And mark your calendar for Christmas Day in 2025 and 2026 when we’ll be streaming at least one holiday game each year as part of this three-season deal.”

Furthermore, Netflix Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria also explains why they decided to enter the live entertainment arena and market. Bajaria says,
“Last year, we decided to take a big bet on live — tapping into massive fandoms across comedy, reality TV, sports, and more. There are no live annual events, sports or otherwise, that compare with the audiences NFL football attracts. We’re so excited that the NFL’s Christmas Day games will be only on Netflix.”
Nevertheless, the NFL is just as thrilled about this new move. They feel that this team up between them and Netflix is “perfect.” Hans Schroeder, NFL Executive Vice President of Media Distribution mentions,
“We couldn’t be more excited to be the first professional sports league to partner with Netflix to bring live games to fans around the world. The NFL on Christmas has become a tradition and to partner with Netflix, a service whose biggest day of the year is typically this holiday, is the perfect combination to grow this event globally for NFL fans.”
A good chunk of cable cutters do have Netflix as one of their streaming services of choice. Therefore, at least a nice amount will be able to effortlessly watch this season’s Christmas Day games. However, this does make one wonder about the future.
Will this cause another price increase? Will this cause more games to be dealt out to other networks/ streaming platforms throughout the season and playoffs? It’s a future that sounds a tad expensive and like the “second coming” of cable. However, Netflix is at least not new to the game and a service many currently utilize. Maybe… just maybe… it won’t be so bad.
