Netflix and Red Sox Docu-Series- MLB Gets Its Own ‘Hard Knocks’
Are you a fan of the Hard Knocks series giving an insider look into NFL teams? Well, baseball is about to get its own version. There is going to be a Netflix and Red Sox Docu-Series chronicling the ups and downs; the players as well as front office of the nine time World Series champion ball club.
Netflix announced the news early on in the day on Wednesday. The streaming service states,
“Netflix is teaming up with Major League Baseball for two new projects about the Boston Red Sox. For the first time, Netflix will follow an MLB team over the course of a full season. This docuseries will feature unprecedented access to Red Sox players, coaches and executives throughout the 2024 season (premiering in 2025). And later this year, Netflix will premiere a brand-new documentary looking back at the historic 2004 Red Sox season, which culminated in the franchise’s first World Series title in 86 years.”
Major League Baseball also provides a few additional details in regards to this momentous documentary event. For instance, how this series didn’t even begin in the format that it has taken on now. MLB reveals,
“The 2024 season will be one in which the Red Sox will allow viewers worldwide a rare chance to sneak behind the curtain and see what the grind of a Major League season is all about.
The process started back in 2021, as more of a broad discussion between Netflix, MLB and the leaders of the Red Sox ownership group about an opportunity to grow the reach of baseball.
‘It wasn’t necessarily going to be about the Red Sox. It was just more of the importance of getting baseball into this medium, these sort of doc series and global platform opportunities,’ said Red Sox chief marketing officer Adam Grossman.
After months of discussions, which included discussions with the front office, the players and the coaching staff, the Red Sox became willing participants.
[Furthermore] given the character development that the film crew envisions, it didn’t make sense to rush out the episodes — hence, the planned release in ’25.
In addition to the project on the ’24 team, Netflix and MLB announced Wednesday there will be a retrospective docuseries on the unforgettable 2004 Red Sox, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. That docuseries will debut “later in 2024,” according to the press release.”
Netflix and Red Sox Docu-Series- MLB Gets Its Own ‘Hard Knocks’
Nevertheless, the direction that Netflix is heading in for this series is pure vibes. Yes, a legacy documentary is cool; but bringing fans closer to the elements behind the game they love; will help audiences understand better as well as develop a brand new appreciation for the sport.
Moreover, this isn’t by accident either. Red Sox chief marketing officer Adam Grossman explains,
“MLB took some time to concept. What would make the most sense from a baseball standpoint, from the industry standpoint? Is it leagues, is it players, multiple teams or specific teams?
It could go so many different ways. And over the course of the year, I think what they landed on was that it would probably be best — given the nature of the grind of a season — to feature one team. Then the question was, what team would do it?”
The Red Sox being chosen though; may seem surprising to fans. Other teams may seem more “ready for the spotlight.” Like following around the super team out in LA; and seeing if all the additions finally ends their playoff curse. Or the youthful Orioles that is looking more powerful; and may be on the brink of new ownership.
Also, there’s the champs, Texas Rangers, under Bochy; can they repeat their success. There’s also the Diamondbacks; a team with the fraction of the budget of other organizations that still made it to the Fall Classic. Or perhaps the Braves; who in the past decade has made the playoffs 6 times and have won a championship from their efforts. Additionally, the Padres, Yankees or Mets; teams with high expectations that fell short. Can they finally get it right?
Then there’s the Rays (remember their hot start and streak in 2023), Guardians, Cubs, Marlins, Brewers and Reds; all teams that have made waves in various ways in recent years.
Netflix to Make Docu-Series on the Boston Red Sox
Nevertheless, folks… the choice is the Red Sox. However, the details surrounding the team could prove to be beyond intriguing. You see… Currently, fans ARE NOT happy. Things need to change, and the Boston wants it ASAP. Club chairman Tom Werner after the Red Sox hired Breslow literally said: “We know that we have to be competitive next year. So, we’re going to be competitive next year. We’re going to have to be full throttle in every possible way.”
MLB writer Mike Lupica also discusses the Sox needing to step it up. Lupica writes,
“It was Red Sox chairman Tom Werner who said at the start of the offseason that the Sox were going “full throttle” on acquiring the kind of players who would get the team out of last place, where it had just finished for the third time in four years.
The Sox have a new head of baseball operations in Craig Breslow and he has been tasked with making the kind of big moves necessary to get them back to the top of the AL East.
But for now, the only major acquisition that the Red Sox have made since the end of last season is trading for Tyler O’Neill from the Cardinals. This is the most important offseason in recent Red Sox history, and it might be as important as any they’ve had since they were forced to pick up the pieces after their heartbreaking loss to the Yankees in Game 7 of the 2003 American League Championship Series.”
Therefore, watching the inner workings of the Red Sox franchise shall be entertaining; don’t you think? It’s GO time for the Sox. Win or sink.
So then, we’re looking forward to seeing the drama unfold. And discovering how Boston goes about regaining their glory. Lastly, hats off to Netflix for providing content that MLB fans want to watch.
