NBA-WNBA Shootout Between Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu is Canceled
With All Star Weekend finally upon us we can look forward to watching some thrilling, amazing events. From the tournament style All Star Game to the iconic dunk contest. However, a men’s and women’s basketball crossover just got the axe. On Thursday it was announced that the rematch NBA-WNBA Shootout between Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu is canceled.
These two three pointer giants squared off against each other last season. It was a tightly contested matchup. However, Steph still was Chef Curry and pulled off the big “W” beating Ionescu 29-26.
So then, after the success of last year’s WNBA and NBA battle; basketball fans were going to be treated to yet another war on the court. Furthermore, Curry was down to run it back but with a new twist. According to CBS Sports,
“Curry was on record saying he wanted the rematch to occur, and there were talks of making it a 2-on-2 format this year — potentially involving Klay Thompson, Curry’s former Warriors teammate, and reigning WNBA rookie of the year Caitlin Clark.”
Unfortunately, the original plans fell through just weeks prior. The W’s biggest star, Caitlin Clark, was honored to be invited but ultimately declined and backed out of the event. However, she invited the NBA to come do the event at the WNBA’s All Star Weekend.
NBA spokesman, Mike Bass added, “We weren’t able to land on a plan we thought would raise the bar off of last year’s special moment. We all agreed not to proceed and will instead keep the focus on All-Star Sunday’s new format.”

The Athletic also reported, citing sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations, that Curry and Ionescu were not interested in a simple rematch and wanted to expand the competition. Since the Klay Thompson and Caitlin Clark vision could not come together; then the NBA just decided to hit the delete button on the entire shootout.
Nevertheless, we think we all can agree that a shootout competition between Curry, Clark, Thompson and Ionescu would have fed families and been a major highlight with humongous ratings. But for now us fans will have to wait until further notice. Maybe both leagues will take Caitlin Clark up on her offer.
