NBA Rescinded Los Angeles Lakers Star Luka Doncic’s 16th Technical Foul

Well, that didn’t take long. An interaction involving two players during Orlando’s last game led to a couple of techs. While both players offered varying stories after the game, the league promptly made a decision to free one of the players from mandatory consequences. Sunday afternoon confirmation came that the NBA has rescinded Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic’s 16th technical foul.

What happened? What caused this chain reaction? Well, on Saturday night, the purple and gold battled it out with the Orlando Magic. It was a close, tense game where LA walks away with the victory by ONE point. Emotions ran high, things were said and techs handed out.

To LA’s dismay, Luka Doncic is called for a technical foul with 1:19 to go in the 3rd quarter, along with Orlando’s Goga Bitadze. Immediately, everyone knew what this meant. If the tech was not rescinded after the game, it would be Luka’s 16th and will cost him a one-game suspension when Los Angeles plays in Detroit against the Pistons on Monday.

After the conclusion of the Lakers game versus the Magic, news emerged of what had transpired and led Luka to commit his 16th tech. NBA reporter Dave McMenamin reveals,

“JJ Redick says that Goga Bitadze said something about Luka Doncic’s mom in a language that the referees could not understand, which preceded the double techs that were called. Redick said the Lakers will appeal Doncic’s tech with the league.

[1 hour later]…The Los Angeles Lakers have already appealed Luka Doncic’s technical foul tonight – which was his 16th – a source told ESPN. LAL asked for a review of Goga Bitadze’s involvement and believe the Magic big man should have been issued a warning prior to the techs.”

Flash forward 12 hours and the appeal is a success. Shams Charania reports,

“The NBA has rescinded Lakers star Luka Doncic’s 16th technical foul, allowing him to play in Monday’s road game against the Detroit Pistons.”

Nevertheless, this move and decision on the part of the league is great for fans. Doncic has been on an absolute tear, leading Los Angeles to a nine game win streak. In fact, Luka is the 5th player in NBA history to average 40+ PPG over an 8-game win streak, joining Wilt, MJ, Elgin and Harden. Luka joins Wilt as the ONLY players in history to average 40+ PPG over a 9-game winning streak. When a player is getting mentioned along with the likes of Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain; yes, you give that player more rope and let go of the leash.

What we are seeing from Luka right now is that “ethical hoops” Wemby was mentioning. Just elite basketball. Nonetheless, we have another interesting fun fact about this amazing run the Lakers are having. Yes, on top of the 60 point game and Luka scoring another 40 points the next matchup. Seriously, what other players are scoring 100 in two games right now?

Anyway, in this nine game stretch, Luka made a little history all on his own. Luka Dončić is now the first player in NBA history to score 30+ points in 9 straight games while winning all 9. Can’t wait to see what happens in game 10. Glad he will play in Detroit.
