NBA Presented Three Anti-Tanking Concepts to its Board of Governors
The league has been working to fix recent and rampant tanking issues. To not only keep competition high as well as entertaining during the season for fans, but make the draft fair; allowing teams that didn’t perform so well to improve their rosters. Three options have emerged that the league feels could do the trick. This week the NBA presented three comprehensive anti-tanking concepts to its Board of Governors.
So what might the future be like when it comes to the draft? How might things change? Well, one big component that we noticed was the inclusion of play-in and playoffs teams. Teams that did significantly better than franchises at the bottom of the standings could possibly get high draft stock. ESPN’s Shams Charania explains,
“The NBA presented three comprehensive anti-tanking concepts to its Board of Governors on Wednesday:
1. 18 teams in draft lottery (seeds 7-15 in each conference) – flattened odds, with bottom 10 teams having an 8% chance, the remaining 20% odds distributed in decreasing order for 11 through 18, and and a lottery drawing for all 18 picks.
2) 22 teams in lottery using 2-year record (seeds 7-15, plus the four playoff first round exits in both conferences). Lottery teams would reach a minimum win total floor in each season, such as 25 wins. If a team falls short of the floor, it gets slotted to meet the floor. Top 4 drawn as part of lottery, as is currently.
3) 18 teams in a “5 by 5” lottery – bottom 5 teams have equal odds for the top pick, with lottery formed for picks 1-5. Bottom 5 teams have a floor at 10; those that fall out of top 5 get sorted in a separate drawing.

That is a lot of new information to take in and consume. So here is a quick summary of the above:
- Play-in teams + bottom 10 are now included in the lottery; with flattened odds and lottery for picks 1-18 (bottom 10 teams all have 8% chance at top pick)
- Play-in teams AND teams that are first-round playoff exits included in the lottery. Lottery includes record last 2 years
- Play-in teams + bottom 10, but 5 worst teams have same chance at #1 and teams that finish with bottom-five records and aren’t drawn in the first lottery would be guaranteed a pick no worse than 10th
There’s a lot for the NBA to mull over and consider. Nonetheless, all of these concepts presented will be tweaked and modified in the coming days. Additionally, final revised concepts will also be voted upon in May.
