NBA Officially Cancels Atlanta Hawks’ Magic City Game Promotion on March 16
There have been many opinions, and a lot of backlash. All culminating in the league finally making a definitive decision. On Monday, the NBA officially cancels the Atlanta Hawks’ Magic City game promotion on March 16. The Atlanta Hawks’ franchise had plans for a night celebrating the city’s famed Magic City strip club.
As news hit in regards to the cancellation, NBA commissioner Adam Silver released a statement about the matter. He mentions,
“When we became aware of the Atlanta Hawks’ scheduled promotion, we reached out to Hawks leadership to better understand their plans and rationale. While we appreciate the team’s perspective and their desire to move forward, we have heard significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees. I believe canceling this promotion is the right decision for the broader NBA community.”
The Atlanta Hawks organization also made clear that the Magic City event would not be carried out as previously planned. The Hawks revealed,
“While we are very disappointed in the NBA’s decision to cancel our Magic City Night promotion, we fully respect its decision.
As a franchise, we remain committed to celebrating the best of Atlanta – with authenticity – in ways that continue to unite and bring us all together.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE GAME:
◾️ Legendary rapper and ‘King of the South’ T.I. will perform at halftime as scheduled.
◾️ The limited-edition Peachtree themed hoodie will no longer be available for purchase at the game on March 16th. All pre-ordered merchandise will be honored and delivered as previously scheduled.
◾️ The live recording of the Hawks AF Podcast including Hawks’ Principal Owner, filmmaker, and actor Jami Gertz, T.I. and Magic City founder Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney has been cancelled. Fans who purchased tickets to the recording will be contacted directly.
◾️ The full array of award-winning culinary options available at State Farm Arena for Hawks games will be available, including wings.”
The NBA has come under great scrutiny since the Hawks event came to light to the greater masses. In fact, the league received “significant concerns” from stakeholders, including fans, partners, and employees. Several NBA players also felt the ATL event was not appropriate for a family friendly league.

San Antonio Spurs’ Luke Kornet was the first to make his displeasure known. In essay, he kindly annd respectfully asked the Hawks to cancel their “Magic City Night”, saying that it’s disrespectful to women. Kornet highlighted that,
“The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world… we should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love… Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”
Luke’s blog post worked. It got the attention of the public as well as the league. The Spurs center said he has received an overwhelming amount of support from around the NBA. But he has also noted the opposing viewpoints on his opinion. Yet, he has a bigger picture in mind. He says,“Actually trying to get the conversation started … is important to help ensure the league is something that everyone is wanting to represent.”
