NBA Has Agreed to 11-Year Record-Setting Media Deal Worth $76 Billion

Money talks. And money plays. It is something that has been in the works for the National Basketball League; but finally it is near to being settled. The NBA has agreed to a 11-year record-setting media deal worth $76 billion.

Yes, that figure is with a B. There is a lot of money to be made in professional basketball. And several media/broadcasting organizations want in on all the action. The usuals like ABC and ESPN are in the mix. However, Amazon and NBC/Peacock is rearing their head in the basketball realm now as well. Even though Peacock left a bit of a bad taste in some fans mouths just months ago.

At the beginning of the year, sports fans were not entirely happy with the NFL’s choice to have a playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins broadcast via Peacock. However, this is the new era of sports viewership. Games are being doled out to multiple entities; causing fans to switch between a plethora of platforms; and at times, have to spend more in order to watch various matchups.

But, people are still watching. Peacock’s NFL playoff broadcast broke streaming records. With a subs increase. Therefore, the powers that be are moving forward with including additional outlets into their viewing formula.

So how will basketball fans watch their favorite sport in the future? Starting in the 2025-2026 season, the NBA will feature nationally televised games almost seven days a week once the NFL season concludes. It is looking like:

  • Monday: Peacock
  • Tuesday: NBC
  • Wednesday: ESPN
  • Thursday: Amazon
  • Friday: ESPN/Amazon
  • Saturday: ESPN/ Amazon
  • Sunday: NBC/ESPN

What are some of the additional details regarding this new deal? Well, for one thing TNT is still making a case. And there are a few more steps in the works before finalization. The NY Times report,

“All three platforms will have playoff games, while Amazon Prime Video will be the home of the In-Season Tournament. Amazon and NBC will alternate showing conference finals. ESPN will have a conference final and the NBA Finals each season.

The NBA agreed to keep the Finals on ABC/ESPN exclusively. NBC is expected to pay $2.5 billion per season, while Amazon is going to dole out $1.8 billion per year. In the current agreement, ESPN and TNT Sports pay a combined $2.6 billion on what is a nine-season agreement. If TNT Sports stands down, this upcoming season will be its final season of games after nearly four decades.

While the NBA and its partner agreed to all the language, incumbent TNT Sports continues to threaten to match. The CEO of TNT Sports’ parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, has publicly stated he may attempt to use language in the current contract to remain involved with the NBA. If Zaslav goes through with that, he is expected to target Amazon’s package.

The next step is for the league’s governors to approve the agreements with ESPN, NBC and Amazon, which is expected to be a formality. The board of governors has meetings Tuesday in Las Vegas. At some point following the final step by the league’s governors, the NBA will send the finished contracts to TNT Sports. At that point, the company will have five days to make its move. If it declines, then the NBA is expected to be an official announcement before the Olympics, which open on July 26.”

So TNT is on the clock. Time is ticking down. Soon we will see what transpires with TNT and the NBA. And fans can look forward to seeing tons of basketball games via the largest sports broadcasting entities.
