It’s extension time. However, not for players, but the big man in charge. This just in… NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is finalizing a contract extension ‘through the end of this decade.’
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, is first to break the extension news. Especially, when detailing how long it may last and what Silver’s future plans for the NBA entail. Adrian reveals,
“BREAKING: NBA commissioner Adam Silver is finalizing a contract extension that’s expected to take him through the end of the decade, sources tell ESPN.
The completion of formal negotiations with the board of governors on a new deal keeps Silver — nearing his 10th anniversary as commissioner — on course to pursue the NBA’s next set of major objectives: a new media rights deal and league expansion.
Silver, 61, has driven some dramatic initiatives, including the introduction of the play-in and in-season tournaments, player participation legislation, draft lottery reform that has disincentivized teams from racing to the bottom for top draft picks and steadily rising franchise financial valuations. The implementation of the league’s freedom of movement emphasis in 2019-20 has increasingly gassed up the league’s scoring.
Silver spent eight years as the league’s deputy commissioner before succeeding [David] Stern in 2014.”
As one can see, during his commissioner tenure thus far, Silver has been able to move the NBA forward in a modern way. Moreover, sports is an industry where owners want profits; and Commish Adam is busy “showing them the money.” As long as Silver is keeping the powers that be happy and the players relatively happy. He most likely has pretty good job security.

Silver is making the NBA and their respective owners CASH. Furthermore, he’s doing it despite challenges as well. As Yahoo Sports comments,
“Adam Silver has been able to walk a fine line as commissioner that his predecessor — David Stern — largely ignored and stomped all over. Silver works for the NBA owners (who could fire him at any point with a vote); and has to keep them happy by making them money. [However], he has also remained broadly popular with the players. Adam is a consensus builder by nature and can convince the players and owners that they all make more money when they pull the rope in the same direction.
Silver has had to make hard calls. Helping push owners Donald Sterling and Robert Sarver out of the league, for example. But has also presided over labor peace and a growing business, particularly internationally. The new television rights deal the league is negotiating is expected to be at least double what the last one was. Which speaks to the growth of the league (and the changing media landscape).”
To fans, Adam’s way may not always be popular. However, the things on his “to-do” list can help set the NBA nicely for future growth. Which means more basketball; therefore, sometimes we must accept the lemons, to enjoy the lemonade.
