Naomi Osaka Eliminates Coco Gauff at U.S. Open to Reach First Major Quarterfinal Since 2021

It was one of the most anticipated matches of the week. It has been six years since their first meeting in NYC back in 2019. Now these tennis opponents found themselves facing off in Round 4. However, after two sets Naomi Osaka eliminates Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 at the U.S. Open to reach her first major quarterfinal since 2021.

While it wasn’t the super close bout many were expecting. It was still wonderful seeing these two immense talents on one court. On Monday, Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff stepped out in front of the excited crowds; a 4-time Grand Slam Champion vs 2-time Grand Slam Champion. No. 23 (Naomi Osaka) and No. 3 (Coco Gauff) meeting for just the second time at the US Open. With the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.

Even before the first swings of their rackets, both Naomi and Coco knew this would be not only a physically draining matchup, but an emotional one. Especially, since both players are very supportive of each other. On Sunday, Osaka even remarked to the media, “Can somebody come to the match and cheer for me because…  it’s tough playing an American here. I hope you guys adopted me as well. I see her as a little sister.”

Naomi’s sisterly affection for Coco shone brightly from the very beginning. Naomi Osaka beat Coco Gauff 6-3 6-0 at the 2019 US Open, back when Coco was 15 and making her Ashe debut. Coco was left in tears; however, Naomi told her she did amazing, offering her to do the on-court interview alongside her.

Nonetheless, Gauff did not take long to find her footing against Osaka. Months later, Gauff then beat Naomi at the Australian Open in 2020 (when Osaka was defending champion) before losing to that year’s eventual champ Sofia Kenin.

But in 2025, Naomi would once again find herself a victor over Gauff. And it wasn’t close. Gauff did not resemble her usual self and never seemed to find or slip into a groove.

However, for Osaka this was an incredible win. Naomi reaches her first Grand Slam QF in 1658 days. That’s 4 and a half years. Additionally, it is also her first one as a mom.

Yet, Naomi has nothing but love and respect for Coco Gauff. After her win she simply stated regarding Coco, “To be such an amazing role model at such a young age is a gift. … I have all the respect in the world for her.” Classy. Congratulations Naomi.
