Myles Garrett Has Publicly Requested A Trade From Browns

Well you can hardly blame him for doing this. Cleveland is in a state of flux right now to put it kindly. He was the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Now Myles Garrett has publicly requested a trade from the Browns. Apparently he is not happy with the way things are being handled in the organization and he wants out. His request is not exactly surprising or even unwarranted as his statement makes clear.

“As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl — and that goal fuels me today more than ever,” Garrett said in his statement. “My love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man that I am today.

While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl. With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.”

Garrett has been a top tier player for the Browns since he joined the team. In his eight year career, he has amassed 352 tackles, 102.5 sacks, 20 forced fumbles and 17 passes defended. Last year he was the Associated Press NFL defensive player of the year and is a finalist again this year. And PFWA have named Myles their Defensive Player of the Year. With those stats he should be on a contending team. But it’s also no wonder that the team has no interest in trading the defensive end.

Myles Garrett Has Publicly Requested A Trade From Browns

According to Executive Vice President, Football Operations & General Manager:

“We feel really good about Myles obviously as a big piece of our future,” Berry said. “We’re looking forward to him being on the field. Like I said in my (early January) press conference, we envision him going from Cleveland to Canton when his career is over.”

And it wouldn’t make sense financially to trade him because Cleveland would incur significant dead money if they did. They would face a $36.2 million dead cap charge with a trade based on bonuses already paid to Garrett. Keeping Garrett in 2025 would result in just a $19.7 million cap charge for Cleveland.

Unless the Browns decide to change their stance on Garrett it doesn’t seem like his trade request will be considered.
