Morgan Freeman Attends NASCAR and Serves as the Grand Marshal

Drivers… START YOUR ENGINES! Hollywood royalty was among the masses and he had an honorable job to do. On Sunday, Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman gets the racing party started as he attends a NASCAR event and serves as the Grand Marshal.

Freeman is an actor, producer, and narrator whose career spans six decades. Having starred in films such as: The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy, Deep Impact, Million Dollar Baby, Lean On Me; the RED series, a plethora of Batman films; Outbreak, High Crimes, Se7en and Bruce Almighty. And that just touches the very fringes of his immense catalog.

Morgan is just as legendary for his voiceover work. You can hear his smooth, deliberate tone in documentaries, commercials, movies, and audiobook narrations. Therefore, it is not a surprise that the Las Vegas racing event organizers were thrilled to have Freeman come out and join in the fun.

Now if you are not to familiar with racing events like NASCAR, the Grand Marshal has a number tasks to execute. Depending on what’s agreed upon, these renowned guests can wave flags, present a trophy and basically be special figures that are invited by the race organizers to add excitement to the race, even before it starts. Therefore, a Grand Marshal is the one who leads the field in several ceremonial activities on race day.

And of course, probably the most important aspect of the day. The Grand Marshal’s chief duty is delivering the proverbial “four most important words in motorsports” — Drivers, start your engines.

There’s been plenty of famous faces that have served in this important role. Everyone from supermodels, to actors as well as actresses; Presidents and other fellow NASCAR drivers. Some notable names in recent times has been Blake Shelton, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Anthony Mackie, NFL HOF’er Charles Woodson, Jeff Gordon and Pitbull. And now Morgan Freeman gets the privilege of giving the command to start the engines at the Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas.

However, this is not exactly Morgan Freeman’s “first rodeo.” He has some previous history with NASCAR. For instance, Freeman served as a honorary pace car driver for the 2004 Indianapolis 500. But he also shared with the press that he once got the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a NASCAR car at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Nice!

Furthermore, according to Steven Taranto of CBS Sports, Morgan just really seemed to soak in the energy as well as excitement and enjoy his day. Additionally, Taranto mentions that several of, “NASCAR’s stars also got the opportunity to meet Freeman during pre-race festivities. Bubba Wallace gifted Freeman a U.S. Air Force hat, adding to the Wallace No. 23 hat Freeman was already wearing. Freeman also took a photo with Austin Cindric, the 2022 Daytona 500 champion and a playoff contender two of the last three years.”

So it was very full day. A very fun day. But Morgan handled his Grand Marshal duties like a pro and it was great seeing this icon in Vegas.
