More News Coming Out Of The NFL Owners Meeting
We’re learning more about what’s happening this week with the NFL. More news is coming out of the NFL owners meeting being held in Orlando. Another big change is coming regarding the kickoff play. The purpose of the rule change is to increase returns and reduce high speed collisions. Below is the official rule change from the NFL:
“By Competition Committee; for one year only, amends Rule 6, to create a new form of a free kick play that is designed to: (1) resemble a typical scrimmage play by aligning players on both teams closer together and restricting movement to reduce space and speed; and (2) promote more returns. Permits the Replay Official automatically review whether a free kick legally touched the ground. Or a receiving team player in the landing zone.”
This change is modeled after the the XFL kickoff returns. ESPN’s Kevin Seifert offers a great breakdown:
“During the 2024 season, kickers will continue to kick from the 35-yard line, but the other 10 players on the kickoff team will line up at the receiving team’s 40-yard line. At least nine members of the return team will line up in a “setup zone” between the 35- and 30-yard lines. Up to two returners can line up in a “landing zone” between the goal line and the 20-yard line.”
“No one other than the kicker and returner(s) can move until the ball hits the ground or hits a player inside the landing zone. Touchbacks will be marked at the 30-yard line, and no fair catches will be allowed. In the event a team wants to attempt an onside kick, it will have to inform officials of its intent. And would then be allowed to use the NFL’s traditional formation. No surprise onside kicks will be allowed.”
More News Coming Out Of The NFL Owners Meeting
As noted above the change is for one year only. The league will want to see how this is received by the players and the fans. In other news, two games will be played on Christmas in the 2024 season. Adam Schefter also posted news about the trade deadline. “NFL owners voted today to approve a trade deadline that now will be pushed back one week, until the Tuesday after the Week 9 games.” He also reported: “The 2024 Hall of Fame Game: Bears vs. the Texans, Thursday, Aug. 1, 8 p.m. ET.”
It’s ironic that the Pittsburgh Steelers just signed Cordarrelle Patterson. Patterson was a dynamic returner so will this rule change help or hurt him? We’ll have to find out.
