More Bad News For Boston Red Sox As Third Baseman Alex Bregman Heads To IL
After discussing some of the drama happening in Boston we thought we had covered all the bases. But wait, there’s more! Not death threats, or a manager taking a day off from work. No this time it’s our old pal the injury bug. That’s right it’s more bad news for the Boston Red Sox as third baseman Alex Bregman heads to the IL. Bregman will placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right quad. Coincidentally, Bregman had suffered a left quad strain in 2021 while with the Astros. Due to that injury he missed about 2 1/2 months.
With that in mind, manager Alex Cora made a statement about the nature of Bregman’s injury:
“Significant injury,” manager Alex Cora said between games of Saturday’s doubleheader. “He’s going to be out for a while. Very similar to ’21. So I’m not going to give you a timetable, but hopefully trust in our medical staff, it’s sooner rather than later. But he’s going to be out for a while.”
“It’s significant,” Cora said. “But like I said before, if we really believe we’re good, we have to keep going and keep playing good baseball and keep winning games.”
Playing a doubleheader today against the Orioles, the Sox made the decision official after Game 1. After having an MRI on Saturday, Bregman spoke about his injury saying:
“It is what it is and now try and take it day by day and crush rehab,” Bregman said.
“It felt better [Friday]. Then [Friday] night I couldn’t really fall asleep. It started to hurt pretty good, and then after the MRI, found out it was pretty severely strained, and now it’s time to focus on rehab. But, yeah, neither of [the quad injuries] really felt that good.”

However, the loss of Bregman proved to be an opportunity for Boston’s No. 2 prospect Marcelo Mayer. He was called up from Triple-A, Worcester making his major league debut today in Game 2. When asked how he felt about it, Mayer said he was super excited and it was something he had been working for all of his life and that it felt surreal. Boston had to transfer first baseman Triston Casas (left patellar tendon rupture) to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster for Mayer.
However, Rafael Devers will not be an option for playing third base. During Spring Training Devers accepted a move to DH and has been playing well at the position. However, Cora did comment, “He’s the best DH in the American League right now,” Cora said. “We made a decision and we’ll continue to talk. I’m not saying we’re going to close the door and all that, you know, but we feel very comfortable with Raffy Devers as the DH.”
So as we wait to see how long Bregman will be out, it looks like Mayer has an opportunity to shine at third base.
