MLB Owners Approve Oakland Athletics Relocation to Las Vegas- The Aftermath Begins
In an unanimous vote, all MLB owners approve Oakland Athletics relocation to Las Vegas. Snuffing out one of the last glimmers of hope of many northern California fans; who desperately fought to keep their beloved team in town. Yet, the vote is done. A change is imminent.
However, this feeling of loss is not anything new for the sports city. Their history is riddled with teams being snatched away. LA Times writer, Bill Shaikin explains Oakland fans’ plight quite well. Bill states,
“This is a dark day for the great fans of Oakland, who did nothing to deserve the loss of the A’s. Oakland now has lost teams in each of the 4 major sports leagues: A’s and Raiders to Las Vegas, Warriors to S.F. and, in 1976, NHL Golden Seals to Cleveland.
East Oakland needs homes, shops, entertainment, grocery stores. The best spot: around the Coliseum. The guy who controls development there is the guy who is moving the A’s to Las Vegas.”

Even with the team leaving, it’s sounding like Oakland is in a hostage situation. Fans want to be free and enjoy the game of baseball, while supporting their community. Yet, the answer is a flat out NO.
Nevertheless, what is next? What happens to the A’s name? Where will they play?
Well, right now, things are not looking so good. There’s no stadium. So then, the Athletics will have to play all over the place. Regarding this Shaikin reports:
“Among the A’s options for a temporary home: a short-term lease to stay at the Coliseum, as the Raiders did before they left for Las Vegas; Oracle Park in San Francisco, where the Giants play; and the triple-A ballparks in Las Vegas and Sacramento.
If A’s want to stay in Oakland through 2027, the mayor (Sheng Thai); wants A’s name to stay in Oakland and promise of expansion team.
MLB Commissioner Manfred: “We don’t even know if we’re going to have an expansion process.”
[Moreover] he said name issue is up to the team, which has said it’s taking the name to Vegas.Rob Manfred on MLB owners waiving relocation fee for A’s: “We felt that a relocation fee in this particular situation was inappropriate,” citing Fisher’s financial commitment to building new stadium. He wants Vegas to feel MLB is committed to the A’s success.”
