MLB Hall of Fame Announces Three New Electees

MLB Hall of Fame Announces Three New Electees

The time is finally here. There’s a new class of Hall of Famers to congratulate and put some respect on their names. Today, MLB Hall of Fame announces three new electees for the class of 2024.

Who are the three musketeers (and if you aren’t doing the Steve Martin/Martin Short dance we disown you)? They are: Adrian Beltre 95.1% of the vote (1st year on the ballot); Todd Helton….79.7  %; and Joe Mauer ..76.1 – who made it by 4 votes (1st year on the ballot). These men join Jim Leland in waiting on the official Induction Ceremony which will take place on Sunday, July 21.

The BBWAA (Baseball Writers’ Association of America) confirms this MLB announcement on their website. They also reveal what it took for these ballers to be selected. The Association states,

“Adrián Beltré, a five-time Gold Glove winner and four-time Silver Slugger recipient at third base, and former batting champions Todd Helton and Joe Mauer were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Tuesday in the 80th balloting conducted by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and tabulated by Ernst & Young.

Players are elected to the Hall provided they are named on at least 75 percent of ballots cast by eligible voting members of the BBWAA. With 385 ballots submitted in the 2024 election, candidates needed to receive 289 votes to be elected.”

Furthermore, according to Manny Randhawa; who reports for MLB.com; this year’s ballot was PACKED with first timers. Of course, we wait on pins and needles to see what happens to the guys still attempting to fight their way in. Some guys who are even on their final try. It’s still nice to find out the newcomers. Regarding these individuals Manny reveals,

“Who will comprise the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024? Jim Leyland, who helmed the Pirates, Marlins, Rockies and Tigers over an illustrious 22-year managerial career, was voted in by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee last month.

Today, we’ll find out who will be joining him from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame ballot. There are 26 candidates on this year’s BBWAA ballot.

The first timers are: José Bautista, Adrián Beltré, Bartolo Colon, Adrián González, Matt Holliday, Victor Martinez, Joe Mauer, Brandon Phillips, José Reyes, James Shields, Chase Utley and David Wright.”

So then, if you are keeping count. That’s 12 guys. 12 newbies were on the ballot.

While Beltre and Mauer are first time ballot inductees. The story for Helton is a bit different. This is his 6th attempt. However, number six proves to be the charm. And no doubt being in the HOF period, makes the number of attempts a non-factor. It still will feel just as good to be inducted whether you’re a first ballot guy; or a player that had to wait tad bit.

Nevertheless, what happens to guys who don’t make it in after their first try? Are there any more interesting details about the voting?

BWWAA Voting and Class of 2024 Facts

The BBWAA were kind enough to provide some information on the above questions. They reveal,

“Candidates may remain on the BBWAA ballot for up to 10 years provided they are listed on at least five percent of ballots cast. There are 14 players from this year’s ballot who will be eligible again for 2025, including two of the 12 first-year candidates

The Hall of Fame has 346 elected members, including 273 players, of whom 139 have come through the BBWAA ballot. The elections of Beltre and Mauer bring to 60 the total of players elected in their first year of eligibility by the BBWAA. This year marked the 10th time the BBWAA elected three players and the first time since 2017.

The average ballot in the 2024 election contained 7.00 names, up from 5.86 last year, with 24.4 percent of the voters using all 10 slots, up from 13.9 a year ago. The total of ballots cast marked a 97.7-percent return rate of the 394 ballots mailed to voters. There were no blank ballots submitted.”

Very interesting. Hall of Fame voting and results always cause quite a stir; but this year’s results are pretty much vibes. Therefore, once more congratulations to Helton, Mauer and Beltre on making it in to Cooperstown. We tip our baseball caps in your honor sirs.
