MLB Draft is Changing Once More Beginning in 2026 Season

It is a time when lives are suddenly changed forever. Hundreds of hopefuls are given the chance to join organizations and be developed in order to possibly become the stars and legends of tomorrow. Over the years, the draft has changed for various reasons. For instance, in 1965 the first draft was established to curb large signing bonuses and took place annually thereafter (this draft still exists); whereas drafts held in January and August were eventually eliminated. Nonetheless, the MLB Draft is changing once more beginning in 2026 season.

If you’re thinking… well didn’t the draft already switch up this year? You are right, it did. In 2025 the MLB Draft got a facelift becoming a two-day event, with rounds 1-3 taking place on opening night. While the entire rest of the draft (rounds 4-20) occurred on day two. This was the first year that the Draft has been shortened from three days to two. But now Major League Baseball’s draft will yet again experience a change. However, don’t freak out, it is not remotely earth shattering.

It basically boils down to being on a different day than usual. This new day change is coming to fruition due to the MLB’s new media rights agreements that will be in effect beginning next year. Regarding the Draft’s upcoming schedule Major League Baseball announced,

“Commissioner Rob Manfred announced [last] Wednesday that, in conjunction with Major League Baseball’s new media rights agreements, there will be some tweaks to the All-Star Week schedule beginning in Philadelphia in 2026.

The first round of the 2026 MLB Draft will take place on Saturday, July 11, moving away from Sunday for the first time since the event moved to All-Star Week in 2021. The first hour of the Draft will be broadcast on NBC, while the rest of the event will air on both MLB Network and Peacock.

Sunday will now feature the prospect-heavy Futures Game, which had previously been played on Saturdays since 2022. The Futures Game will be broadcast on NBC.”

As one can see, Major League Baseball is still making adjustments with All Star Week. Moving the draft over a day. The exact timing of day two of the draft has yet to be finalized, and as of yet, it is not clear when the remainder of the MLB Draft will start.

It’s not even a certainty that it will remain a two-day event. Although MLB clubs have seemed to generally be happy with the switch to two days. We’ll just have to wait and see.
