MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Says His Tenure Ends in 2029

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Says His Tenure Ends in 2029

Major League Baseball has seen its commissioner position change hands throughout the years; and now there is word that we could be seeing a replacement in just a few more loops around the sun. Try 5 to be exact. In a head-turning announcement, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says his tenure ends in 2029; at some point during the beginning of the year.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan breaks the news via social media platform, X. In a very brief one liner he states,

“Rob Manfred said his tenure as Major League Baseball commissioner will end in early 2029.”

Interesting. However, Manfred actually had plenty more to say today; just not much about his retirement. ESPN baseball reporter, Alden Gonzalez, not only backs Passan up on the retirement news; but also mentions a few other topics the commissioner covered in his presser. Gonzalez says,

Rob Manfred held court in Tampa today and talked about retirement, expansion, the new jerseys, a signing deadline, injury manipulation, Diamond Sports Group, the A’s and the O’s.

As one can see, Rob had plenty to say and a plethora of topics to discuss. Nevertheless, getting back to his retirement in about half a decade; January of 2029. The Athletic’s Evan Drellich also provides confirmation that this is in fact Manfred’s final term as Major League Baseball’s commissioner. Quoting from Rob Manfred’s Tampa presser, Drellich reveals

“Rob Manfred is done as commissioner in January 2029.

‘You can only have so much fun in one lifetime,’ says ManFred. ‘I have been open with them (the owners) about the fact that this is going to be my last term.’

The day he was re-elected last year, Rob Manfred said he was unsure if this term would be his last. Today’s answer suggests he had, in fact, already decided. Best I know, the first he hinted at it *publicly* was last week:

‘Having said that, look, I got five ( years as commissioner) left; this year, and four more.’

Therefore, sounds like retirement is definitely in the cards for Rob Manfred; who has not been a fan favorite. However, there’s plenty of work still to get done on his end. So then, it will be interesting to see what other changes go down in baseball before his time is up.
