MLB Announces Partner Pioneer League Will Use Robo-Umps an Automated Ball-Strike System

OMG it is TERMINATOR JUDGEMENT DAY! Okay, now before you go searching for John and Sarah Connor; do know that… we kid. However, robots are coming into the picture when it comes to baseball umpiring. The MLB announces that the Partner Pioneer League will use Robo-Umps an Automated Ball-Strike System.

A new system that the “powers that be” hope will make the game more fair. Accurate. And above all else, keep baseball lovers happy and enthusiastic about the game.

Fans for quite awhile have been complaining about a lot of the bad calls that happen during nine innings of baseball. However, the MLB heard all the disgruntled rumblings; and now fans wishes are starting to be granted. There is now a test in place to move away from the human touch and drift into a realm of robo umps, a new era. Ryan Glaser who is a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America confirms the new use of non-human umpires. He reveals,

“MLB just announced the partner Pioneer League will use the automated ball-strike system (a.k.a robo-umps) to call balls and strikes this season. It’s the latest testing in the partner leagues (former independent leagues) for rules changes that could potentially come to MLB.”

Now, if you’re not too familiar with the Pioneer Partner League. No problem, we got you. In fact, we’ll just let Major League Baseball fill you in about it. The MLB’s own definition of this league:

“Since 2021, the Pioneer League has been a Partner League of MLB, providing players with less than three years of professional experience the opportunity to be scouted by MLB clubs and allowing MLB to experiment with new rules on the field.

The American Association, Atlantic League, Frontier League and Pioneer League are professional baseball leagues that have been designated as Partner Leagues.

The leagues provide development opportunities for young players throughout the country and for veteran players who seek a second chance to reach the Major Leagues. Partner Leagues also provide formal, MLB-sponsored programs to give people with diverse backgrounds additional playing and coaching opportunities.”

As one can see, this helpful league allows the MLB to have a testing ground for trying out new elements. To have a place to basically iron out all the kinks before they bring it up to the guys at the pro level.

However, in the end one may wonder will Robo Umps truly make the game better and more fun? Sometimes teams benefit from a little human error. How many of us have been actually happy when a ump called a ball that should have strike; giving our team another shot? But then on the other hand, during very serious game moments, a bad zone call can drastically cost teams a win. Therefore, this change may be good; or may take out a human factor that should be there. However, improvements in accuracy should definitely always be strived for, whether in a mechanical or human setting.
