Minnesota Vikings' Rookie QB J.J. McCarthy Will Undergo Surgery

Minnesota Vikings’ Rookie QB J.J. McCarthy Will Undergo Surgery

He played in his first preseason game last week and acquitted himself nicely. But after the game against the Raiders on Saturday it was discovered that he had suffered a knee injury. On which play the injury occurred is not known. In a virtual press conference today, head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an update. Minnesota Vikings’ rookie QB J.J. McCarthy will undergo surgery to repair a meniscus injury. McCarthy did not participate in Minnesota’s final training camp session on Monday night. He had reported to the facility earlier in the day with knee soreness.

Head coach O’Connell had this to say regarding the injury:

“It has been determined that J.J. does have a tear in his meniscus, in his right knee. He will need to undergo a procedure, obviously that will hopefully take place in the near future here,” O’Connell said. “But as far as a timeline on the injury, that will be determined during the procedure, based upon whether it can just be a cleanup or potentially a repair. That won’t be able to be determined until that procedure takes place. I would just be speculating on a timeline for a return at this point.”

“I credit J.J. for obviously being able to continue to play. He did not come out of the game from the injury,” O’Connell said. “He finished his night with his second touchdown pass and at that point had reached the snap count I was hoping to get him for the game. At no time did he think it was something that would take him out of the football game, not allow him to play.”

There is no recovery timeline yet as was mentioned by O’Connell. However, veteran quarterback Sam Darnold is listed as their No. 1 passer. They also have Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall as backups. So at this time the team hasn’t determined if they will need to add another quarterback to the fold. But O’Connell did say, “My confidence level in Sam is very, very high at this point.”

As mentioned earlier, McCarthy played well in the preseason game; so that’s some good news for the team. His stats were 11 of 17 passes completed for 188 yards with two TDs and one INT over his six drives, also adding two rushes for 18 yards. Hopefully the recovery timeline for the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft will be a short one.
