Minnesota Vikings Quickly Snatched Up Former Arizona Cardinals’ Quarterback Kyler Murray

It had been known that the Arizona Cardinals were going to release their quarterback. And it was thought that he would likely get taken by the Minnesota Vikings. Well, the rumors were correct as the Minnesota Vikings quickly snatched up former Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray. Posting the details, NFL Insider Tom Pelissero wrote:

Two-time Pro Bowl QB Kyler Murray has signed a one-year contract with the Vikings, his agent @ErikBurkhardt  tells me and @RapSheet . The deal includes a no-tag clause. Murray will make $36.8 million this season, with Arizona paying all but the minimum salary.”

Being under a one-year deal means Murray will have the pleasure of working under head coach Kevin McConnell. McConnell is known for bringing out the best in quarterbacks so that will be a boost for Murray. Already in the Vikings’ quarterback room is J.J. McCarthy whom the Cardinals went with as their starter for last season. After having let go Kirk Cousins the veteran quarterback who went to Atlanta after being released by the Vikings after the 2023 season. Now with the addition of Kyler Murray the Vikings will have a veteran presence at the quarterback position.

Additionally, Murray will be able to learn from McConnell and improve his chances of being picked up by another team after his one-year deal ends. Or if he impresses them, he may be able to stay with the Vikings. Either way this move should provide Murray with some options in the future.

Murray experienced an uneven time while with the Cardinals after being taken by them with the first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He had the potential to play baseball but eschewed that for a career in football. Some felt that was a mistake due to his stature at 5′ 10″ which is considered short for an NFL quarterback.

Nevertheless, he won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019. And set multiple rookie records for the Cardinals’ franchise. Furthermore, he received consecutive Pro Bowl selections during his next two seasons, along with leading the Cardinals to the playoffs in 2021, their first appearance since 2015.

He had one winning season in 2021 going 9-5 and they broke even in 2020 at 8-8. But things did not improve after the Cardinals fired Kliff Kingsbury and brought in Jonathan Gannon in 2023. Murray started that season on the physically unable to perform list due to a torn ACL in the previous season. As a result, he missed the first nine games of the 2023 season.

Despite all that Murray displays all the talent needed to be a top-tier quarterback. This fresh start will be a chance to prove it.
