Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx Announced Matthew Caldwell As Their New CEO
As the proud new owners of the Minnesota NBA and WNBA franchises they have wasted no time in executing their vision. The Timberwolves’ made their second consecutive trip to the Western Conference Finals this past season. And the Lynx are poised to make the playoffs starting on September 14 as they sit atop their division at 30-7. In order to keep the good times rolling the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx have announced Matthew Caldwell as their new CEO.
Caldwell’s background is in hockey where he guided the Florida Panthers to two straight Stanley Cup championships. He joined the Panthers in 2014 as the chief operating officer but was promoted to CEO in 2016. Caldwell’s success is just what co-owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez are looking for to help their basketball teams. In a joint statement they commented on their vision for all the teams:
“Our vision is for the Timberwolves and Lynx to set a new standard of excellence in pro sports and we’re confident that Matthew is the leader needed to make that a reality,” Lore and Rodriguez said in a joint statement. “Leading our organization into an innovative new era requires an exceptional individual at the helm and Matthew’s proven track record leading the business of the Florida Panthers is undeniable. We can’t wait to see the remarkable impact his bold leadership will have on this organization.”
Therefore, they agreed to a 10-year deal for Caldwell to be the CEO. After a four-year battle for control of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx, the new owners were eager to make changes. And this is one of them. Clearly they want Caldwell to work his magic on their teams like he did for the Panthers.

Of course, Caldwell will miss being around hockey but he’s looking forward to joining the NBA. He expressed how he felt about the change stating:
“I love the NHL. I’ve enjoyed hockey and I’m a big fan of it,” Caldwell said. “But the NBA is just a much bigger, global platform. I really believe in Marc and Alex and their vision and what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to make Minnesota best in class.”
Caldwell will assume responsibilities from interim-CEO Kelly Laferriere, who has led the organization during its ownership transition period. Laferriere will assume the role of Senior Advisor to Ownership. Tim Connelly, President of Basketball Operations, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Cheryl Reeve, Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations, Minnesota Lynx, will continue to oversee basketball operations for their respective franchises.
Congratulations to Caldwell on his exciting transition from the NHL to the NBA!
