Milwaukee Bucks Waived Damian Lillard To Acquire Myles Turner From The Pacers
He spent two seasons in Milwaukee and gave it all he had. Including suffering a torn left Achilles tendon in the playoffs. Prior to having his Achilles surgically repaired he had also dealt with a deep vein thrombosis in his right calf. Nevertheless, despite enduring these injuries and doing all he could to be on the court, he was given the bad news yesterday. The Milwaukee Bucks waived Damian Lillard to acquire Myles Turner from the Indiana Pacers. Ironically that’s the team the Bucks were playing in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series in which Lillard tore his Achilles.
Lillard had played three games in that series as he made a remarkably fast return from the deep vein thrombosis in his right calf. However, he was injured in the first quarter of Game 4 which the Bucks ended up losing. But now his time in Milwaukee has come to an end for the seven-time All-NBA guard. However, Lillard welcomes the release for a number of reasons. He now will receive all of the $113 million owed, will be able to rehab in Portland surrounded by his family, and can choose his next destination on his own time.
All of this was confirmed by ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania who posted about the release:
“Just in: The Milwaukee Bucks are waiving Damian Lillard and stretching the remaining $113 million on his contract in order to acquire Myles Turner, sources tell ESPN. Lillard’s two seasons in Milwaukee come to an end as he rehabilitates a torn Achilles tendon.
The Bucks found a creative path to waive and stretch Lillard – whose $113M will be stretched over the next five seasons – while leaving their future draft assets untouched. In a stunning turn of events, Myles Turner departs the Pacers to join the Bucks.”

A more detailed explanation on the financials was provided by ESPN:
“By waiving Lillard prior to Aug. 29, the Bucks can use the “stretch provision” in the CBA while leaving their future draft assets untouched. For salary cap purposes, the Bucks can stretch his remaining two years to five — meaning they will pay $22.5 million per year. The stretched salary can’t exceed 15% of the salary cap, which is currently $23.197 million.”
So although it seemed callous to release Lillard, apparently it will work out just fine for him. And of course his release made the way clear for the Bucks to pursue Turner. And they landed him according to Shams Charania:
“ESPN story on the Milwaukee Bucks‘ stunning release of Damian Lillard to acquire free agent center Myles Turner on a four-year, $107 million deal.”
Turner, at 6-foot-11 is an excellent rim defender. He is one of just three players in NBA history with 700 3-pointers and 1,400 blocks, along with Brook Lopez and Rasheed Wallace.
Best wishes to both players as they embark on their new endeavors.
