Milwaukee Bucks Damian Lillard Out Indefinitely Due to Blood Clot Found Right Calf

You never like to see an athlete step away from the game. Especially, when they have so much more to give. However, Milwaukee’s hometown star will have to hang it up for a period in order to care for his health. On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Bucks confirmed Damian Lillard will be out indefinitely due to a blood clot found in his right calf.

Blood clots are serious and should be handled in an urgent manner. And steps have been taken to ensure Lillard’s overall well-being now and in the future. League sources reveal that Lillard is on blood thinners, which has stabilized the blood clot in his right leg. And he will continue with regular testing to get him back to good health.

Nevertheless, this update on Damian helps to finish putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. You may recall that about a week ago Lillard was out for health reasons. It was announced that he would be held out of a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers in order to nurse calf soreness. And went on to sit out three games.

Now the big picture has come together. And the diagnosis is in, resulting in Lillard having to say goodbye, at least for the time being, to the game he loves. Damian is not the first NBA player to walk away from basketball due to blood clots. Aaron Gray, Chris Bosh and Brandon Ingram (to name a few); all decided to retire for the same reason. Even in the NFL blood clot injuries have been addressed, like the Patriots Christian Barmore.

NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on the Lillard news. Indicating that tonight’s decisions were made with both parties (Damian and the Bucks) believing this is the best course to take. Haynes states,

“Breaking: Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard will be out indefinitely after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his right calf, league sources tell me.

Damian Lillard to me on his diagnosis: ‘It’s unfortunate that something outside of my control would come up. Along with the Bucks’ medical staff, our priorities are to protect my health and safety. As much as I love basketball, I need to be there for my kids and my family. I’m grateful the Bucks acted quickly on this. They’ve been supportive and proactive throughout this process. I look forward to moving past this and continuing my career.’”

So far the Bucks have not released a timeline for Damian’s return. But there is some very positive news. Bucks General Manager, Jon Horst, explains,

“Damian’s health is our No. I priority. We will support him as he moves through this weekly process of strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play. Doctors have indicated that his situation is very unlikely to occur again. We are thankful that this was identified and medicated quickly, which helps with the recovery.”

Very good to hear such positive sentiments from the doctors. Regardless on how things shake out,  it has been a privilege to watch Damian on the court. Damian Lillard has played 13 seasons for the Trail Blazers and Bucks. He has averaged 25.1 points, 6.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 900 regular-season games. We hope he fully recovers soon, enjoys more time with his family and when he’s ready enjoys the next phase of his career.
