Milwaukee Bucks and Antetokounmpo Family Come Together To Make NBA History

Family reunions can be fun providing great memories for all in attendance. But in this case this family reunion is historic. The Milwaukee Bucks and the Antetokounmpo family have come together to make NBA history. On Monday, Milwaukee surprised fans with its latest move: signing Alex Antetokounmpo, the younger brother of Giannis. ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania posted about the deal on x.com writing:

“The Milwaukee Bucks are signing Alex Antetokounmpo to a two-way NBA deal, joining older brothers Giannis and Thanasis, Octagon’s Alex Saratsis tells ESPN. This marks the first time in NBA history that three brothers are on active roster contracts with the same team.”

One NBA team having three biological brothers under contract at the same time is a first. However, some people are not impressed by this fact. They believe that the team is just pandering to their superstar player Giannis “Greek Freak” Antetokounmpo. Rather than it being a strategic move designed to improve the team. But if it is a case of pandering it’s because of what Giannis has done for the team. After all he did deliver the team’s first championship in 50 years.

Nevertheless, newly signed Alex who is 24, spent the last two seasons playing in Europe and had multiple stints in the G League earlier in his pro career. That included spending time with Raptors 905 and the Wisconsin Herd. He has yet to appear in a regular-season NBA game. To bring on Alex, the Bucks cleared a two-way spot by waiving Jamaree Bouyea. Alex is expected to split time between the NBA and the G league giving the team a chance to evaluate him at the NBA Level.

One person who seemed pleased about the brothers coming together is former NBA champion Dwight Howard. The eight-time All Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year posted his reaction on x.com(formerly Twitter) stating:

“Uh oh the bucks looking scary they got all the brothers back” 🔥🔥🔥

But despite the team accommodating Giannis by signing his brothers, some question how long he will remain with the Bucks. He signed a three-year, $186 million extension in October 2023, complete with a player option for the 2027-28 season. This deal indicates commitment but also keeps the door open. Giannis has two seasons left on the extension before the next contract decision will need to be made. There had been talk of him being pursued by the New York Knicks but discussions never reached an advanced stage.

However, Giannis Antetokounmpo said he’d like to end his career on a Greek team, via @BasketNews_com: “I don’t want to live in the United States. As soon as I leave the NBA, I want to return to Greece.” Therefore the history he and his two brothers made may not have much of an impact on his decision-making in the future. We’ll have to see how it plays out.
