New York Mets Head to NLDS After Defeating Brewers in Wild Card Series

Which team would prove to be October ready? This wild card series had been a total shootout. New York took game one in dominant fashion winning, 8-4. However, Milwaukee fired right back the next day in game two refusing to go down in defeat. Led by their energetic and power bat rookie, Jackson Chourio, they evened up the series 1-1, by beating NY 5-3. And now we finally have a victor, the New York Mets are heading to the NLDS After defeating the Brewers in the Wild Card Series.

The first several innings was just a straight up pitchers duel. Both teams’ starting hurlers did their jobs. Excellent pitching and defense prevented either team from scoring. In fact, the first six innings failed to produce a score by any team. It was clear that this was going to be a major duel.

However, that’s not to say there wasn’t efforts to score. The Mets Francisco Lindor and Brewers Gary Sanchez both doubled. Jackson Chourio drew a walk and stole a base. Other Brewers also singled yet the game remained 0-0.

But going into the 6th inning Milwaukee had a choice to make. Keep your pitcher that has been dealing in; or… take him out. Get someone new on that mound.

In baseball so many decisions are risky. The analytics can show that leaving a pitcher in through too many rotations or times through the opposing team’s lineup can be “the kiss of death.” But on the other hand, a starting pitcher can just be having one heck of an outing. Managers have to know when to ride the hot hand and when to make a change.

So then, what decision in the end did the Brewers make regarding pitching? They switched pitchers Tobias Myers to Trevor Megill. But this proves to be the right decision. The top of the 6th inning is over in a flash. 1-2-3 outs.

Flashing forward to the seventh inning. Then FINALLY. A score! The Brewers take the lead with a Jake Bowers home run. But then they go back to back! Sal Frelick also blasts one of his very own to right field as well. In the blink of an eye Milwaukee is up 2-0.

But when you have a Home Run Derby winner on your team; you don’t exactly think it’s over. New York came raging back with a vengeance spoiling the Brewers fun. In the ninth two men get on base then big bat Pete Alonso obliterates a ball right out the park! The Mets take the lead 3-2. By the time all the damage is done New York leads 4-2.

And that’s the way it would stay. The Brewers would not be able to answer back. New York is victorious in a must win matchup by two runs.

Nevertheless, what a game! It had some of the best pitching performances from starters and bullpen players. But now it’s time to move on and upward. The Mets will next play the Phillies in a best of five beginning on Saturday.
