Mike Tomlin Stepped Down As Head Coach Of The Pittsburgh Steelers

He’s leaving on his own terms which is all you can ask for after almost two decades of doing his job. He had been the longest tenured head coach in the NFL. But now he has decided to move on to other things. Today Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. After 19 years in the position he made the call to leave his post. Now the Steelers will have to set out on a quest for only their fourth head coach in the history of the organization.

In a statement by President Art Rooney II he praised Mike Tomlin saying:

During our meeting today, Coach Tomlin informed me that he has decided to step down as our Head Coach. Obviously, I am extremely grateful to Mike for all the hard work, dedication and success we have shared over the last 19 years. It is hard for me to put into words the level of respect and appreciation I have for Coach Tomlin. He guided the franchise to our sixth Super Bowl championship and made the playoffs 13 times during his tenure, including winning the AFC North eight times in his career. His track record of never having a losing season in 19 years will likely never be duplicated.

My family and I, and everyone connected to Steelers management, are forever grateful for the passion and dedication Mike Tomlin has devoted to Steelers football.

Tomlin will finish his tenure with Pittsburgh as Super Bowl XLIII champion with a 193-114-2 record and of course never having had a losing season. However, it was the lack of a recent playoff win that caused people to criticize him. But as many have said, the Steelers haven’t had a franchise quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired. It’s almost impossible to go far without one, yet he still finished at .500 or above every season he was there.

Tomlin will now have his choice to do whatever he pleases, whether it’s taking time off or jumping into the television analyst fray. Former Steelers running back, Le’Veon Bell said, go to where your celebrated Coach T.” We completely agree with that statement. Tomlin has earned the respect and admiration of players, other coaches and fans. You can read Mike Tomlin’s statement here.

We sincerely offer our hearty congratulations on an excellent career with the Pittsburgh Steelers starting at the young age of 34. Whatever you choose to do, may you find happiness and peace!
