Gone way too too soon. Henderson was a Hall of Famer that thrilled crowds of fans for decades. He was one of the best to ever do it as a lead-off hitter and base stealer. On Saturday, many prominent individuals and teams had much to say about the “Man of Steal”… here’s how Mike Piazza and Major League Baseball reacted to the passing of the great Rickey Henderson.
Former fellow teammate, Mike Piazza, took to social media to express his condolences. He writes,
“Rickey Henderson was a dream to hit behind as teammate and a nightmare for a catcher as an opponent. He was one of the most generous, hysterical and gracious human beings..He will be sorely missed..Prayers for his soul and family.”
Major League Baseball also released a statement about the iconic Henderson. The league stated,
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson. Across a 25-year career, Henderson was a 10-time All-Star, 3-time Silver Slugger Award winner, 2-time World Series champion and the 1990 American League MVP. Nicknamed the “Man of Steal,” Henderson owns the record for most career stolen bases (1,406) as well as the Modern Era (post-1900) record for most steals in a single season, with 130 in 1982.
He led the American League in stolen bases in 12 separate seasons, and was MLB’s overall steals leader in six of those years. 14 of Henderson’s 25 seasons were spent with the Athletics. He also played for the Yankees, Padres, Mets, Mariners, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Angels and Dodgers. Henderson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009. He was 65 years old.”
