Mike McCarthy Will Not Return As Dallas Cowboys Head Coach

The Cowboys are in a drought. They are coming up on thirty years, almost three decades since they last won a Super Bowl on January 28, 1996. In hopes of finally putting an end to their lack of recent championship success; the organization is making a change. On Monday morning it was announced that Mike McCarthy will not return as the Dallas Cowboys head coach. The search is now on for his replacement.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero kicked off the day with the Dallas sports bomb. He reports, “Sources: Mike McCarthy is out as Cowboys coach. The sides couldn’t agree on length of contract and McCarthy will pursue other opportunities. He leaves Dallas with a winning record and three playoff appearances.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also followed up with a little more intel and ultimately backed up the Cowboys head coach news. He especially discussed more information about negotiations surrounding Mike’s contract. Or should we say lack there of? Adam reveals,

“Jerry Jones said talks between he and Mike McCarthy did not get to ‘the point of contract negotiations.’ Not only was a deal not close, it was not even discussed.

Mike McCarthy is not expected to return to Dallas and is now set to become a free agent, per source. The two sides engaged in no discussions about a new deal, and McCarthy is expected to be a candidate in Chicago and New Orleans.

Rules prohibit any interviews to be scheduled yet, but former Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy is expected to interview this week, and as soon as Wednesday, for the Bears head coaching job, sources tell Todd Archer and me.

The Saints also are expected to have interest in McCarthy.”

Mike McCarthy Will Not Return As Dallas Cowboys Head Coach

The Cowboys owner, president and GM Jerry Jones released an official statement about the Cowboys and McCarthy parting ways. He states,

“Throughout Mike McCarthy’s tenure here, including the last several weeks, I have been very complimentary of the job he has done.

That has applied to our record over that time period, our team unity and culture, Mike’s qualifications and track record of success, and on a personal level as a tremendous human being. I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure.

Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team. These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover. Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction. I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family the best. They have been a wonderful part of our community here.

We will commence a search process immediately to hire the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

So then, Jerry Jones is now hunting and in the market for his ninth head coach. He is hoping to get his team back on track and hoisting trophies. Therefore, it will be interesting to see in the coming days who he picks for this position.
