Mikaela Shiffrin Made History Winning 100 World Cup Races
She exhibited greatness from a very young age and didn’t disappoint. This past Sunday she added to her growing legend in Alpine skiing. She competed at the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Women’s Slalom in Sestriere, Italy, on Feb. 23, at the Kandahar course. And it was there that Mikaela Shiffrin made history by winning 100 World Cup races. She became the first athlete in Alpine skiing to accomplish the feat.
But it didn’t come without it’s challenges. Just three months age she suffered a horrific crash that resulted in a punctured abdomen. That severe injury happened during Shiffrin’s first attempt at her 100th World Cup title last November. As was reported by the Associated Press Shiffrin said she suffered from PTSD after the tragic fall in a giant slalom race on Nov. 30 in Killington, Vermont.
“I’m mentally blocked in being able to get to the next level of pace and speed and putting power into the turns,” Shiffrin said in an audio message shared with The Associated Press on Monday. “And that kind of mental, psychological like PTSD-esque struggle is more than I anticipated.”
It’s unknown what stabbed Shiffrin in her fall at Killington but it nearly punctured her abdominal wall and her colon. She told The Associated Press last month that her injury was “a millimeter from pretty catastrophic.” And that’s why it’s so amazing that after the physical and mental damage she suffered she was still able to come back and compete. And not only compete but set a historical record in the sport. After just two months of recovering, Shiffrin was back on her skis. Her first competition back was a slalom event in Courchevel, France, in January in which she finished 10th place.

All of that tragedy has now been put behind her. And her fellow competitors are in awe of her accomplishments.
“She doesn’t just want to win; she blows the competition away,” Austrian skier Annemarie Moser-Pröll, who has won 62 World Cup titles, told FIS World Cup. Moser-Pröll added: “One thing is certain for me; Mikaela is and will remain the best ever.”
As for Mikaela, a two-time Olympic champion, she was nothing but grateful. “Everybody’s been so nice and so supportive, all of my teammates and competitors and coaches and the whole World Cup,” Shiffrin said at a press conference on Sunday. “I’m so grateful. Thank you. And the fans, thank you.”
Congratulations Mikaela, the greatest athlete in her sport!
