Michigan Wolverines Beat UConn to Win Their First Title Since 1989

Michigan was staring down almost four decades since their last title win. And on Monday all they had to do was defeat the powerhouse UConn. They succeeded. Michigan Wolverines beat UConn to win their first title since 1989. The Wolverines finally return to the top of college basketball.

However, that’s not the only college hoops history that the Wolverines accomplished. They also did something basketball fans haven’t seen in the last 26 years. Michigan now becomes the first Big Ten team to win a national championship since 2000.

But truth be told, the Big Ten is just dominating and owning the big stage right now. Michigan’s championship win completes a hat trick for the Big Ten, which won national championships in both men’s and women’s basketball and football this year. To this point, OptaStats mentions, “The Big Ten is the first conference in Division I history to have 3 different schools win national championships in football (Indiana Football), men’s basketball (University of Michigan Basketball) and women’s basketball (UCLA Women’s Basketball) in the same academic year. The SEC won all 3 in 2006-07, with Florida winning 2 of the 3 (Tennessee won in women’s basketball).”

What’s also impressive about this victory is a change that Michigan made at head coach recently. Wolverine’s head coach Dusty May is only in his second year with the university program. And already he has them hoisting a trophy. May is now just the fifth coach in NCAA history to become a champion in his first two seasons at a school. The rebuilding and May’s ambitious plan has definitely proven to pay dividends.

Nevertheless, Michigan’s second NCAA crown — exactly 37 years after the 1989 Fab Five revolution; came the old-school way: with just two 3s in a gritty 69-63 grind over UConn. Furthermore, Cadeau was certainly a standout in this final game of the tournament. Elliot Cadeau led Michigan with 19.

Additionally, Michigan shows that it’s not about high spending. You can win with a “smaller” budget. Michigan’s athletic department budget is one of the highest in the country. However, its men’s basketball program spent just $14.4M with $10M dedicated to the roster; ranking 26th in the country, a fraction of UConn’s $21.6M budget. But it was the Wolverines who cut the net down last night.

But money or not, the players had to play. These young men had to be their best and they balled out. Congratulations to Michigan.
