Michael Pittman Jr. Traded to Pittsburgh Steelers and Receiving New Contract

It’s been quite the NFL free agency day. And it is not over by a long shot. In the midst of NFL headlines a wide receiver has moved from Indianapolis to the Pittsburgh organization. Michael Pittman Jr. was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers and is receiving a new contract. Pittman only had one year left on his Colts deal, so trading him saves the Colts $24M in cap space and leaves them with just $5M in dead money.

There were multiple teams interested in Michael and for good reason. Pittman Jr. was WR1 during a several-year stint in Indianapolis as the Colts sat on the QB carousel (quite the dizzying carousel at that). Even still, Michael Pittman Jr. twice topped 1,000 yards and proved to be an excellent veteran presence in the WR room.

Additionally, Michael Pittman Jr. recorded 40 receptions against split-safety coverages in 2025, tied for the 4th-most among wide receivers with Puka Nacua. The Steelers faced split-safety at the 7th-highest rate in the NFL last season (45.9%).

Therefore, for the above reason and more; it’s clear to see why Pittsburgh had an eye on Michael. And waited for the Colts to set up with Alec Pierce and then swoop in. Nevertheless, Michael now has found a new home with Pittsburgh and is also receiving a new contract for over $50 million. A contract negotiated by Andrew Kessler at Athletes First. NFL reporter Tom Pelissero discussed the details of the deal between Michael and the Steelers stating,

“The Steelers are signing newly acquired WR Michael Pittman Jr. to a new three-year, $59 million deal, sources tell The Insiders. So a trade and a new deal for Pittman, who now figures as a key piece in Pittsburgh.”

After making almost $30 million this year, Pittman’s salary will go below $20 million annually as Pittsburgh’s WR2 to DK Metcalf. The Steelers were in desperate need of some wide receiver help. And now will have some offensive weapons.
