Miami Dolphins Set to Take Largest Dead Money Hit with Release of Tua Tagovailoa

Well, it’s that time again when the free agency frenzy has everyone up in arms. Yes, the NFL free agency period has begun, and changes are happening fast and furiously. One of the biggest changes is coming out of south Florida. The Miami Dolphins are set to take the largest dead money hit with the release of Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins will take on a record $99 million in dead money split over two years. The quarterback is guaranteed $54 million even with his release after the start of the new league year.

This free agency period will see a large payout to quarterbacks who have been released. Geno Smith formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders is guaranteed $18.5 million, Kyler Murray is guaranteed $36.8 million from the Arizona Cardinals. And Kirk Cousins is guaranteed $10 million from the Arizona Cardinals. In a strange twist, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted, “Falcons are expected to pursue Tua Tagovailo, per sources.”

In the meantime, the new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and new head coach Jeff Hafley will have the opportunity to choose their own franchise quarterback. However, Sullivan posted a statement on x.com about Tagovailoa:

“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year.

“As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and the player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions both on the field and in the community during his six seasons in Miami.

“As we move forward, we will be focused on infusing competition across the roster and establishing a strong foundation for this team as we work towards building a sustained winner.”

In addition to releasing Tagovailoa, the Dolphins have reached an agreement with quarterback Malik Willis. The former Green Bay Packer signed a three-year deal with the team. Willis did a great job serving as the backup for Jordan Love and many teams had an interest in acquiring him. But Miami won out in the end. Also, the Dolphins are sending Minkah Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets in exchange for the 2026 seventh-round pick from the Los Angeles Chargers. The Jets are giving him a three-year $40 million deal.

We will see what the future holds for Tagovailoa going forward. Perhaps he should take the guaranteed money and retire due to his concussion history. But he has made it plain that he wants to play, so we’ll see.
