Miami Dolphins General Manager Search Ended With Hiring Jon-Eric Sullivan

Other reporters had made it known that the Dolphins had found their general manager. However, the team didn’t make the announcement official until this past Friday. So now we can say that the Miami Dolphins general manger search ended with the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan. ESPN NFL Insider, Adam Schefter had broken the news that the Dolphins were in the process of coming to an agreement with Sullivan. Sullivan had been the VP of Player Personnel for the Green Bay Packers.

Sullivan spent 22 seasons with a football tradition rich organization. During his tenure the Packers won a Super Bowl and appeared in six NFC Championship games. Sullivan himself said that he became an executive instead of a coach because, “I’m a better evaluator than I am a patient teacher… my skillset was better suited to evaluate and help acquire players.” Therefore, it comes as no surprise that he has a reputation for developing top executives.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said that ESPN Analyst and Hall of Fame QB Troy Aikman was consulted on the Dolphins GM search. Aikman will also be working in a similar capacity for the head coach search. However, now that Sullivan has been hired he will be leading the search with owner Stephen Ross with Aikman assisting. On an interesting note, while Sullivan was with the Green Bay Packers he was very close to the DC Jeff Hafley. Hafley has been requested to interview the Dolphins head coach position.

However, Hafley has also received interview requests from four other teams. Which ar the Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans. But if the Dolphins can win him over it could be the start of something special for the Miami Dolphins.

• Football is in his blood. His dad, Jerry, was a football coach for more than 40 years, including the 2004 wide receivers coach for the Dolphins.
• He is a firm believer in building through the draft. “I’ve always been taught the draft is your lifeblood, if you will,” Sullivan said in an interview on the Packers YouTube channel. “You build through the draft. It’s a young man’s game. You want to make sure you’re acquiring young, talented players that fit your culture. I think you supplement through free agency.”
• Sullivan recognizes the value of having a great quarterback. Albert Breer of SI.com wrote this week that Sullivan “was a key voice in drafting Jordan Love.”

It sounds like the Dolphins made a good choice, picking Sullivan as their GM. Now if they can do the same for the head coach then there could be fireworks in Miami again.
