Memphis Grizzlies Defeat Boston Celtics For First Time Since 2021
The reigning champions had looked to extend their winning streak against the Memphis Grizzlies to seven games on Saturday when the teams met in Boston. However, history would come to tell a different tale. The Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Boston Celtics for the first time since 2021.
No doubt Boston had felt good about their chances against their opponents. The Celtics had won 16 of their past 17 matchups versus the Grizzlies, including the past 10 in Boston. So then, with Saturday’s matchup being at home it could of easily felt as if the story had already been written.
While the Celtics’ offense has needed some adjustments here and there, the franchise felt their defense has been a saving grace as well as a major factor to their success. Before playing Memphis Jrue Holiday remarked,
“We’ve been through it (poor shooting). I think we rely on our defense a lot. Being able to go on the court and know that our defense can save us at any time or keep it close … I think our defense held it down for us today.
I appreciate (the Bucks) pushing us. That’s what makes the game fun. I think that’s what battle-tests us for the future. … We want to win the game no matter what it takes, especially being at home in Boston. So took this game for what it is and move on to the next one tomorrow.”

Well, the Grizzlies were up for the challenge. They looked at this game as a testing ground of their very own; in order to see their strengths and where they are at in terms of growth. Memphis guard Desmond Bane had mentioned regarding playing Boston, “This game is a good barometer. It’ll give us a good opportunity to see where we’re at.”
Saturday’s game showed the Grizzlies have the right pieces and the right stuff to win. The game was TIGHT all the way through. A real intense fight. If it weren’t for some turnovers and a couple blown defensive plays the game could have gone the other way.
The last half was a bonafide thriller. The Celtics erased a 14-point, third-quarter deficit, taking a 97-94 lead early in the fourth. However, Memphis said hold up now, we didn’t come this far just to come this far. Memphis rallied and led 117-115 with less than four minutes to play. The Grizzlies then really hit the gas and scored seven straight to bring the scoreboard up to 124-115.
In the end Memphis prevailed winning 127-121; with the Grizzlies now improving to 16-8. Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. put on a show. Morant had 32 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists for the night. While Jaren racked up 27 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist.
Clearly, Memphis is on a roll. The Grizzlies have now won 8 of their last nine games. No doubt this win will only continue to fuel their growing confidence on the court as a team. Next, the Grizzlies will face off against the Wizards tomorrow on Sunday.
