Matthew Stafford Has Permission To Talk To Other Teams

Matthew Stafford Has Permission To Talk To Other Teams

He has played in sixteen NFL seasons and is not ready to hang up his cleats yet. In fact he made it clear that he wants to go for his seventeenth season in 2025. But presently he is taking up a lot of cap space with the Los Angeles Rams. Therefore, quarterback Matthew Stafford has been granted permission by the Rams to talk to other teams about his market value. This was reported on Saturday by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Rapoport went on to expound on what Pelissero had reported. He posted the following on his social media account:

“Echoing reporting from @TomPelissero: The #Rams have given permission for Matthew Stafford’s agent to speak with other teams about his value. This is not a trade request. Instead, the Rams and Stafford can gain a better understanding of his value outside the team, potentially making it easier to get a contract done. That remains the hope, that outside help can assist in gauging the market and seeing his value — and that this results in his return to LA.”

So it sounds like the Rams would like to keep Stafford in house. Right now he is under contract through 2026 and has a $49.6 million cap number in 2025. But if the Rams were to trade Stafford in a post-June 1 transaction they would save $27 million in cap space. Or if they cut him post-June 1 they would save $23 million. But some believe the contract negotiations last season between Stafford and the team may have soured their relationship. His guaranteed money for the final two years of his contract was all moved up in 2024 as a resolution to last summer’s contract dispute.

Another issue Stafford may have is the team’s plan to move on from Cooper Kupp. Stafford’s wife Kelly expressed confusion as to why they would do that on her podcast. “I will say the trading away of Cooper, I guess I’m just a little, I’m confused. Because we were one play away from going to the NFC Championship, and I think if we go, we win.”
Stafford has had a lot of success with the Los Angeles Rams. He took the team to Super Bowl LVI and won, he got a Pro Bowl nod in 2023 and they made the playoffs in 2024. If they decide to move on from him they could turn to veteran Jimmy Garopolo as their bridge to the next franchise quarterback. However, he is set to be a free agent and would need get him re-signed. Nevertheless if Stafford is set on playing in 2025 we’ll have to wait and see for which team he’ll be playing.
